I drove into the city across the West Gate Bridge at around 4:30 p.m. on Friday and it seemed there was no surge anywhere in Melbourne. I was giving several rides between Richmond, Hawthorn and Kew from 5-7 p.m. and had no surge fares. It was unusual for a Friday and I thought I was in the twilight zone.

It was hectic on Friday evening so I wasn't always able to check the heat map but I noticed it was surging in the city around 10 p.m.

Uber had some technical issues in the morning and I wonder if these (albeit different technical issues) persisted well into the evening. If so, it would be nice if Uber compensated drivers who drove on Monday morning and evening. They have the data to compare the average surges on Friday to be able to compensate drivers who had pickups in the busy zones during the affected period.

Is anyone able to verify if they had surge fares on Friday between 4 and 10 p.m.? Perhaps it is me who is mistaken.

Friday winter without rain and footy on school holiday.

Too many hungry drivers around the cbd, what do u expect?
Footy shouldn't be a factor from 4-7 p.m. Not sure school holiday will be a factor on a Friday evening either. It's one thing if there wasn't a surge in the CBD, but it seemed there were no surges anywhere in Melbourne on a Friday night, which is unusual.

Thanks LevelX. From your screenshots, it seems there were surges during Friday peak period, just very very sporadic. So my theory that there was a technical issue during this period seems off base. Very unusual for a Friday though.

Since you have it all worked out why bother asking

Friday usually has no surge. Saturday has more. Today also had quite a bit... An Eats restaurant staff in Richmond commenting that a 2.8x surge in South Yarra at 6.30pm earlier today was turning all his food cold cos no drivers wanted to do Eats with that high a surge.

You accepted those fares at the base rate. Thinking Uber is going to pay you extra is wishful thinking

I didn't have it figured out UXDriver, which is why I asked.

I disagreed with your suggestion that a Friday without footy would mean less demand from 4-7 p.m. in the city. Footy games start at 8 p.m. on Friday. Disagreeing with you doesn't mean I have it figured out. Why so bitter UXDriver?

That's UXDriver. Brash, abrasive, to the point. Don't get offended.

I would say they're thinking of new ways for you to compensate them not the other way around.
To be more serious, I would say it's the early July period, it's cold with no rain, there are no major events as well as no footy and the fact that there are thousands of other cars (including taxis) competing for the same business.
