So I was leaving the airport after dropping off a rider, then there was a ping. I pressed accept immediately and started the navigation. Moments later my phone rang. I answered via the hands free speaker phone.

The rider said, "We are having a bucks night and can you pick up a couple of boxes of cigarettes and bring them here?" I was like, WTF? So I pulled over and grabbed my phone. I said, "Hello, Name, could you please repeat what you said?" So he went again, "We're having a bucks night, can you buy us couple of boxes of cigarettes and bring them here? We'll reimburse you."

I replied, "So let me see if I understand you properly. You don't want a ride but you want me to go shopping for you?" Rider, "We'll reimburse you, we will."

Me, "Sorry I don't know where to buy cigarettes, I have no cash or credit card with me to pay for the cigarettes. Please cancel the trip, goodnight and have a nice bucks night."

Some mothers do have them.

An alternate ending
Another response might have been "Gee buddy, what did your last slave die from?" o_O Only in Adelaide! :p

Instyle seems to have the right approach... but these things are kinda no-win situations, due to the ratings system.

Does everybody understand the ratings system? It's absolutely fascinating how it works, let me tell you all about it...

Well, that was the only response I could think of under the circumstance, heavy traffic, airplanes flying above my head, other angry drivers. This strange request threw me off balance.

That you were purchasing cigarettes (or alcohol should you ever be asked) and on selling it to your customers would technically make you a retailer I believe and you do need the appropriate license for that. Anyone ever asks tell them it's illegal they need to be in the car or pay you in advance.

Well, strange people, weird world we live in.

Funrides finished last Sunday and now no more UberX in ADL. Not sure if I want to drive again due to the insurance. It worried me the whole time during the Funrides.

I'm a cabbie been around 30 odd years and your story is fairly typical of things that once went on. Imagine if you picked up the cigarettes and a sixteen year old takes them off of you at the address then his parents get home and ask how he got hold of them. It could possibly create a problem. Wait and see with Uber the legals if there is a problem aren't worth the risk until they have a clearly defined legal framework.

Reminds me of the time I pulled up for pax and there was TV, Lounge, boxes etc on footpath. Pax comes over and says "can you move me" ?

Another time I pull up with car in creek and pax says "Can you tow my car out of the creek" ? and the guy didn't have a rope or chains but some wire !

Did you know that as a "Passenger Driver" you may also be asked to transport parcels much like a courier. They usually only call on you when courier company very busy.

At least you won't get pukers who vomit all over you car.

Btw, doesn't look like there will be UberX in Adelaide. They lost all that money to the Funrides!

You've gotta hand it to the SA Minister for transport, mr Mulligan. I spoke with him about a year or so ago on a ride to Sydney airport. UBERX was the topic of conversation and I asked him what would his response be when they hit Adelaide. His rather brave and what I thought naive reply was that his Department would enjoy fining them out of existence. I asked him what he and his department would do different to all the other jurisdictions in the World that has seen UBERX grow. Unfortunately his phone rang and the conversation ended

But the proof is in the Pudding, 2 launches and still no UBERX in Adelaide

I've had this happen but they requested pickup at a 7-eleven, I arrived they called and said we are down the street at a hotel(4miles away) and we really need a pack of cigs and a 6-pack of beer.

They said we will give you $20 cash to cover the 2 items and rest is your tip.

I did it only because I liked the beer brand incase they blew me off.

They actually ended up giving me $30 cash which was nice and before I handed them their shit I said let me see you give me 5-stars right now.

Well it was dark and two large guys with tatoos been drinking so I told one of them to get behind their car and push which he did and I attached wire to the chassis and ... we got it outa the creek !

I was only a sedan and told them to try a station wagon and left. In hindsite probably should have put them onto the courier division furniture truck would have done it cheap.
