I received my registration renewal reminder yesterday. It had a sting in the tail that left me discombobulated.

In late November last year, I had my Uber car (known colloquially and locally as the 'green froggy') inspected as part of the licensing and accreditation process. I had this done at the ACT Road Transport Authority's Dickson Test Station. The inspection cost $66.40.

This was only three months ago.

The front page of the reminder notice includes the following statement: 'Important you must adhere to renewal requirements over the page'.

Over the page, there's a heading 'Renewal Requirements' and the following text: 'You must present a passed and current Certificate of Inspection when you renew your registration. Public vehicles...must be inspected at the Dickson Test Station. Bookings are required, please call 13 22 81'.

My passed inspection certificate from last November was valid for only 30 days so I can't use that.

Be aware of this requirement and don't leave renewing your registration to the last minute.

You do not have to go to Dickson and pay anything.

Just book online at Uber in Quilpie St Fyshwick, and they do it for nothing. Take the form they give you tommotor registry and all,is good.

I did this last month

Can we still have our vehicles inspected at the UBER facility in Quilpie Crescent, Fyshwick (at UBERS expense) or do we have to go to Dickson ?
Namloot, I don't know.

We can use the Uber inspection facility free of charge for the initial licensing and accreditation process, but I don't know what the position is when it comes to registration renewal.

The statement on the back of the registration renewal reminder (as quoted in my original post) is unequivocal. It states that all public cars must be inspected at the Dickson Test Station. A rideshare car is a public vehicle.

It's possible that the statement is misleading or incomplete, but I just don't know.

I can't face up to another round of going backwards and forwards between Uber and the ACT Government so soon after completing the earlier process with all its trials and tribulations.

So I have decided to fork out an
additional $66.40 (tax deductible) and go to Dickson and hope against hope that all goes smoothly when I upload the new registration certificate.

May I also suggest that all drivers put calendar entries into their phones to remind them to update their driver records re rego and insurance.
Why, because Uber does not pre warn you to update and you find yourself 'OFF-LINE'.
HAL has just sent me reminders by text and email of my pending registration renewal and the need to upload the replacement registration certificate. This is a welcome development.

Here is the text of HAL's email:

YOU HAVE A DOCUMENT EXPIRING IN 14 DAYS

Please update your document before your old one expires, otherwise we'll need to put your Uber partner account temporarily on hold and you won't be able to drive. Let us know if you have any questions!

Vehicle Registration Certificate (with Rideshare condition)

After noting the difficulty some drivers had had in uploading their certificate of registration for their rideshare car to HAL's system, I decided I'd head out to the Fyshwick office and get some help from Alex.

Alex was friendly and helpful, and did it all for me.

Yes, HAL still requires that the document you upload has 'rideshare' on it and, no, the ACT Government no longer includes this magic word on the paper certificate of registration they provide you with.

But the magic word does appear in all its splendour and glory on the online version of the certificate.

Go to 'Motor vehicle registration and renewal' on the Access Canberra website. See https://www.accesscanberra.act.gov....otor-vehicle-registration-and-renewal#!tabs-3.

Then select 'Check registration details', accept the conditions, input your registration number, and HAL's your uncle.

The type of car is highlighted. Select that and there is the certification you need to satisfy HAL. Right down the bottom, you'll see the heading 'Rideshare (Y/N)' with a 'Y' in the box (you hope).

Take a photo of this certification and upload it and HAL will be well pleased.

There's a trap for the unwary. You also need to upload your mandatory (passed) certificate of inspection. I discovered that the ACT Government representative in the Access Canberra shopfront was going to keep this without providing me with a copy.

So I asked for a copy, which they willingly provided. So make sure that you make your own copy or that they provide you with one you can keep and upload it to HAL's system.
