When someone tells me they are a driver I will come right out and say " oh, so I can expect a good tip."
Works almost every time.
Anyone telling me they expect a tip is guaranteed to not get a tip. I tip for good service, which is 99% of rides. It's a huge cost to me, because I take an uber ride 4-5 times a week. So my $30/week expense goes up to like $50. But being rude is bad service, and telling me you expect a tip is rude.

That's fine because you are a tipper . Most people that get into the car are not . The only time I ask for or expect a tip is for out of state runs . I explain the situation to them . I am getting more hard line on this . I don't think it is unreasonable to ask to be compensated for gas and tolls while you cannot earn . Beside the fact that you have just given someone a safe ride in what sometimes can be difficult driving conditions .
