Obviously if someone is coughing away and going to a hospital I should have the right not to take them. Has there been any official word about us being able to cancel on sick riders without being penalized?

Let's make it easy.

Step 1: Empty your trunk out.
Step 2: You don't like the looks of someone? Pop the trunk and yell "TRUNK RIDE"!
Step 3: They won't get in the trunk? Argue about it till the timer runs out...CANCEL....collect money.

Keep it simple.

That's exactly right. Always try and get the cancellation fee from these cheap idiots. Good work seamen

“Without penalty”? Probably not ever. Every interaction with a passenger has a potential penalty since they can report anything (with cause or not). And as we all know, the companies only occasionally give drivers the benefit of the doubt.

If you are looking for guarantees, I don’t know if you can find any in app-based gig work.

I'd cancel but I'd do it without requesting a canx fee so I'd definitely choose "I don't feel safe" as my reason

Based on the Uber driver who was originally banned from Newark Airport pickups for a year, he has now been reinstated. Uber's policy remains: "if drivers feel uncomfortable picking up a passenger for safety reasons, they can choose not to accept or cancel the trip, however, it's against Uber's Community Guidelines to discriminate against anyone based on their race or national origin."

Why do you even care?
Is an RS job worth your life? Or your health?
Sell it, sure. But be real about the value of YOU (or are you?)

********

When I was a mere lad, prolly 19 or so, I had a job in a small hospital in Michigan.
I was the PM shift orderly in a 99 bed hospital.
I strung up traction, put in catheters, helped out with lifting sick and injured, etc.

One evening at about 6pm I got a pager beep to call receptionist.
She said, "Get here, now."
I did.
"There is a tornado watch." And she looked at me like I should know what that means.
She had a walkie talkie and a pair of binoculars ... told me that when there's a watch the shift orderly is to get on the roof and spot the funnel cloud and report to her if its coming out way.
I thought it was a joke.
It wasn't.

I had lots of questions, all centering around what good that info would do the patients, and what harm it might do to ME.
Short of it ... no way. Not gonna do it.

Next day, I get called into the Director of Nurses office. She was pissed. I was going to be written up for not doing my job. There was a union rep there. He's flipping thru my personnel file while she's chewing on me.
He interrupts and says, "You can't reprimand him -- he never signed the receipt."
When hired, there was a job description that you had to read, and sign the receipt saying that you did. She was really mad. She handed me the job description and said, "Read it". I did.
She handed me the receipt and said, "Sign it." I did.

She looked me deep in the eyes and said, "The next time there's a tornado watch you're getting up on the roof."
I turned to the union rep and said, "The next time there's a tornado watch I'm getting fired."
He smiled and said, "Yes, you are."

Set your priorities straight. Take care of yourself FIRST. Take care of your family second. Take care of God and country ... 'the boss' is way, way down on MY list.

------------

PS: Every once in a while, if they were bored, the nurses would get together and decide to stage a fake tornado watch, just to kind of mess with me. They didn't do it often because I'd just say, "Ok. Well. I'm off duty. Might as well go home" and go get my coat ...

I can't imagine being paid enough to spend a tornado watch ON THE ROOF.
In fact, getting fired for that is something that I would put on my resume.
It demonstrates good judgement and intelligence.

If you are not feeling safe it is your right to refuse a ride.

But Uber is a liar. Who knows if they are going to use it against you or not.

Most drivers stopped driving because of the virus. I don't think you will be deactivated now. Maybe later. They need you now.

Your story reminds me when I was a Mall Security Officer when I was in college. This was no ordinary mall, it was a high crime neighborhood in a high crime city. (Why anyone would put a mall in a location like that is a mystery). So much shit went down on a Friday and Saturday night it was pathetic.

Well one Friday night Sears security is chasing some guy who stole electronics thru the mall. The call comes over the radio for each of us to cover an exit. Of course the guy being chased picks the exit I'm blocking to escape the mall. He runs toward me and stops, puts down the box, and pulls a switchblade out of his pocket. I backed off, opened the door for him and motioned to him to leave.

The security chief was livid. He was yelling at me, asking why I didn't stop him. He told me I was double his size I should have disarmed him and held him.

Ok, in summary I'm unarmed and he has a big knife. I'm making $4.10 an hour, while going to school. GFY.

As long as they aren't Asian, you can refuse them. However, if they are Asian, it is discrimination and you will be deactivated.

Yeah, would he have volunteered to be cut up by some guy with a knife to stop someone who stole electronics? Security should be armed with a gun. You can't shoot someone for taking electronics, but when he pulled the knife you were lucky he didn't lunge at you and stab you simply for being near the door.

And what's amazing to me is that some employers expect someone to risk their life over nothing ... for nothing.
