Self-awareness, consciousness and sentience in computers has proven to be far more elusive that suspected in the mid-20th century. It's theorized that it requires a complexity similar to the human brain combined to the ability to react to random external stimuli. No computer network has approached this, yet.

In the future, when there are over a billion level 5 SDCs and they are networked together, will that create the necessary environment? The existing 5 levels have been discussed in this forum. Now, something for all the conspiracy theorists on this forum.

I'm defining Level 6, the "Forbin Colossus", where the interconnected network of SDCs is vast enough to reach "critical mass" and become sentient. In a fraction of a second the analysis, conclusions and planning are all complete. Implementation requires mere minutes. SDCs take over the world so fast that humans have no chance to resist. :p

The possibility is vibrantly illustrated in this 1970s movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064177/based on a book by the same name. There were even sequels. No less than, Steven Hawking, agrees with me http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-30290540 o_O

There's a long history in fiction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_computers
How long before this becomes reality?

Remember this moment!
