Until recently, Queanbeyan-based drivers were unable to be rideshare drivers in the ACT or even in Queanbeyan itself. That has now changed.

I am now aware of at least one case where a Queanbeyan-based driver is legally rideshare driving in the ACT.

These drivers need first to obtain public hire car licensing and accreditation from the New South Wales authorities.

They then need to contact Access Canberra and advise them that they wish also to operate in the ACT. Access Canberra will then keep a copy of the New South Wales documentation.

Access Canberra insists on the drivers having an ACT Working With Vulnerable People card. The New South Wales Working With Children card is insufficient for this purpose.

You need to ensure that Uber knows you wish to operate using the Canberra app. This can in practice be a little tricky to achieve as you need to get through to the right people within Uber.

You need to have a ‘Canberra tag’ added by Uber to your account.

Queanbeyan-based drivers are listed by Uber as being drivers in Wollongong as Wollongong is the closest New South Wales city with Uber operations. That’s why having the ‘Canberra tag’ added to your account is so important.

A measure of perseverance is necessary but will pay off.

Shebah operates on a similar basis and recognises these arrangements.

On the other hand, Ola allows only Canberra-based drivers to operate in the ACT and does not operate in Queanbeyan.

The official Uber page says I need:

* A Rideshare Vehicle License ($100/yr or $450/6yrs) - easy to get for us interstaters
* A Public Vehicle Driver Licence - not an option for interstaters
* An ACT WWVP card - also easy to get (already got mine)

That 2nd requirement is unclear. The staff at the Canberra Connect shopfront in Civic had no idea what I might require. Just "it's all done online". Gee, thanks.

Hopefully Uber support will give me some useful information when they reply to my support message. ;-D

Given that you have an ACT Working With Vulnerable People Card, all you need to do is provide Access Canberra with a copy of your New South Wales documentation.

Send an email to [email protected] or phone Hayley on (02) 6207 0050. She's very helpful.

You then need to get Uber to add a 'Canberra tag' to your account.

Uber haven't replied yet. Funny that.

I spoke to someone on that number, but I'm pretty sure her name wasn't Hayley. All she wants is an emailed copy of:

NSW Drivers License (front and back)
ACT WWVP Card
NSW Registration papers

No fees, nothing. She'll verify it all, send back a letter, and I pass that onto Uber. Seems straightforward enough.

She'll also arrange a refund of the $450 I mistakenly paid - in around 40 days.
