So to test this I ordered an Uber from a driver I was talking to and cancelled after 5 minutes. He received no fee. My Uber app said there was no cancellation fee applied, and when I went to "help" for that trip and picked "I was charged a cancellation fee" it said "no cancellation fee was applied".

HOWEVER, when I go to my credit card site it has $5.00 charged by Uber.

I filled out a fare review and told them fare should be 0 not $5, and I'll email if they don't change it, but is this sneaky or what?

Also, when you cancel it does WARN you there MAY be a cancellation fee. Why, if there is none? And we know the driver isn't getting it.

I'd be curious to know if you hadn't written I for an adjustment what would happen. If the fare stuck on your credit card the. There's some serious fraud which is something I suspected months ago and even tried to test with the help of some here but it never happened. Did they credit you?

It was taken off. Yes, that's the next test I guess. Wait a few days to make sure its not just a temporary authorization. Amex will always take it off even if uber refuses at that point.

Maybe a hold of $5.00 like gas pumps do.... verify that the card is active.
Get Me was doing $40 holds or maybe it was $25 but it was a lot.

People started complaining because it would be on there for a couple of days - up to a week. So a night out, going to eat, going to the club, going home can easily cost you $100 in holds. (this was realized among Austin riders, the college kids who can barley afford a $5 ride home.

I just had this happen last night. I arrived at pick-up location, waited for rider and even called her. After a couple of minutes she cancelled. I wrote Uber support requesting a cancellation fee: Uber's Reply "We currently do not provide a cancellation fee for partners and riders in Houston."

The same thing happened last weekend while Surge was in effect for Texan's Season Opener.
Share Details: Arrived at rider's location. After waiting a couple of minutes I called rider; rider requested to cancel trip. I should be compensated a cancellation fee due to high demand in nearby area for trip requests to NRG stadium.Received Ping from rider, not in Surge area, waited a while then called. He said, "Sorry, but I need to cancel. I will pay you for your time."
Naturally, once I was able to make it over to NRG the Surge had completely subsided. I contacted Uber and requested a cancellation fee.
Uber's Response:
"I've reviewed this trip and added $5.00 to include a cancellation as one time courtesy. In your next weekly statement, please check the Miscellaneous payment section to review.

Your fare adjustment will also be visible in your next payment statement
I appreciate your understanding and patience here. Also, I want to thank you for your commitment and professionalism even in the hard time.

You are a wonderful partner and an asset to the Uber team. If there is anything else I can help you with, please do not hesitate to reach out and I will be more than happy to lend a hand.

If Uber truly values drivers as a wonderful partner and an asset, then why not pay Drivers cancellation fees EVERY time rider cancels, especially AFTER you've arrived. If Rider is charged a cancellation fee, and I'm sure that they are, UBER should be sharing that with the Driver - THE ONE WHO ACTUALLY PUT IN THEIR VALUABLE TIME AND PROVIDED THE SERVICE TO PICK UP THE PAX?!!!

Anyone that doesn't respond to my calls and text after 5 minutes I start the fare and ride off. They'll have to cancel at their end. But they'll be charged for my time. After they finally cancel ride I report them and rate them 1.

Don't care if they rate me a 1 either. But I'm pushed to my patience after 5 minutes wait time and time to get the pickup point. And for uber drivers that randomly do this to other drivers (unless both agree on testing system).

I had one Uber driver last week do this to me and I reported him. Remember the app pinpoints your location when you request a ride. And I can find it on my end.

If it's the weekend or a holiday you got 2 minutes to respond to my calls or text when I arrive. No response, I start the ride.

Had one guy give generic address for a mall. I arrived and asked which side and what store. No response after 5 min. I started ride. Cost him $40. I reported him too. And he started to respond right away after I started ride. Dick.

Thanks for the tip guys. Nice Ubering with you o_O

Believe cancelation fees are illegal in Texas. Commerce Law, chapter 601.
I just read that. To me (granted, not a lawyer) it looks as though the chapter doesn't apply too most uber trips (because they're under $25) AND possibly because of the location of the transaction (although I'm tired and only read that part once).

It could easily be done as a "waiting" fee anyway. Basically once you're there, you are working for the pax, not only after they get in the car.

I also looked up taxi and limo companies, and there are cancellation fees applied by some of those too.

Concur, that's why I mentioned "believe".

Most trips are under the 25 limit, but even on X I'll have multiple 25+ fares daily, usually airport runs but not always. A good lawyer could use commerce laws to sue Uber in a class action, coming down to decision by the judge on applicability.

Then again, laws have never stopped Uber before.

Over the past few weeks, several riders have told me they are still getting charged cancellation fees. So clearly it's going to Uber pocket and not ours....
