hey all

DC Uber driver part time here

Moving out to LA most likely in August for 2-3 months and then again May 2019 for 4 months or so

I know uber won’t profit me hardlyanything in LA (doesn’t in dc either believe me) but mostly am out there to support the gf as she spends just a year out there for grad school

I’ve thought about using my personal dc Mazda but seems like changing registration and plates and all back and forth like Uber requires would be a huge PITA

It seems like hyre, hertz, fair...some decent rental competition out there that maybe I can get something for a while so I can get around LA myself and hop around to drive Uber a bit to cover some rent.

Just wondering if anyone has any best bet or personal experience w renting, Uber’s programs, etc. Will be near Sherman oaks fwiw

Feel free to dm me too if anyone actually has any great ideas or anything that worked well for them.

Going this route I think I’ll have to pay to switch my license back and forth maybe but this will be much easier than the whole car

And yes I know I’ll be lucky to earn anything more than my expenses and so on and so forth

Thank you all in advance.

Is there a good way to transport your car to la from georgia? I might go back to oc but I'm not driving it out all the way over there lol. I'm finishing school in the fall (i'm old asf) but I wouldn't mind doing some uber/lyft until I get a job (lol never going to happen)

Try Lyft Df. To get to LA set it for Boston.

Lol, renting. Not to be a jerk, but try anything other than renting. I have done it and it is a killer unless you are working 60+ hours a week.

If you have to...absolutely have to. Then rent from Fuber. Too many dead spots on Lyft. If you are north of the 10 or in oc then Lyft...just don’t crash or get hit by the 10’s of thousands of drunks or potheads or cell phone addicts. 2500 is the deductible.

Personally I’m going solo and getting a rickshaw. Hopefully a lobotomy as well to forget I’ve been stuck in this racket.

Anyone have a cheap drill, no medical obviously. I YouTube the lobotomy. Do it myself.

change your license to CA and do doordash/ postmates. they don't check your insurance or registration

i think you'll be able to make about the same amount you would base faring it for uberx without the hassle of insurance, rentals, registrations, new plates, etc.

You'll also save the rental money.

Sherman oaks is literally the next city south of Van Nuys(My old hood. I moved away in January). Plenty of restaurants in that general area.

Let's say you rent a Prius for a week from Hyrecar

Cost for week rental $289
Gas for a ton of driving on a Prius: $150
Do 20 rides a day, 140 a week (8-10 hrs a day)- should make about $200 gross
Uber quest bonus at 125 rides = $275

So let's add it up:

$1400
$275
-$289
-$150
$1236/week

Working 7 days, 8-10 hrs a day

Pros: it can work
Cons: you gotta work long hours

Honestly $100 profit a day is fine with me. I’ve been fortunate enough to have some savings. Never taken a backpacking trip or vacation after graduation or anything so this 6 months or so I can afford to go without much income. Honestly would be nice to have a car out there period and then the flexibility of doing uber when the gf is working/sleeping etc to chip in and keep some savings

Has anyone used fair any? I know they have the $500 upfront cost. They said the second time (Ie when I come back summer 2019) itd only Cost $250 or so upfront w a discount code. Those are only like $110 a week it seems.

Dude, $100 a day is easy peasy with delivery. Less mileage. Just have to really scout the area. I can suggest some hot spots. But you'll figure it out. Save restaurants on a custom map on google. Run two apps. Boom. Just capitalize on your peak times or you are boned.

I know a guy who leases a car from a Place in the Valley for 235 per week, which includes all maintance and insurance. If you can figure out a strategy that makes you 200 a day, it might work for u
