Hi guys

Im new here and to Uber.
have not officially started but thought id shoot a few questions re car rego, insurance and ATO
ive tried to get as much info as possible but some of it is still a little blurry so i thought id ask the experts - you guys !

I am thinking about Ubering part time. Sydney
mostly d0ing 20hour weeks
BUT, want to also be able to do more if i have to

with rego, does the car have to be registered as business vehicle regardless of hours ?

Insurance - ive read all the stuff about Alianz - up to 20hr week seems very limiting
can anyone recommend an insurer that will cover me should i do 20 hours and or more ?

ATO - i believe up to 30hours a week is considered Part time
anything above is full time
has one got experience of hat to do if they are registered as part time but then does a 30+ week ?
is it just better to register as full time in this case and thus be covered in the event i do +30hours

Yes, you need business rego and green slip regardless of how many hours you work.

NRMA is also a good option for car sharing insurance as well - I'm with them.

The third question doesn't make sense. You must remit GST to the ATO every quarter and pay tax by the end of the financial year. This income will be called "Personal Service Income".

Whether you work full time, part time or casual it doesn't matter. You are liable for GST and are responsible for remitting it to the ATO each quarter. So yes - you need to register for an ABN / GST. How you are affected income tax wise will differ depending on your personal circumstances. I'd speak with an accountant. Use any advice from these forums as a guide only.

Understand that Allianz allows unlimited ridesharing insurance options. NRMAs options will differ.

So you want to work 20-30 hours or thereabouts per week? How much would you ideally like to make in terms of net pay each week? Keeping in mind that roughly 50% of what you take (after Uber takes their commission) needs to be set aside for GST, Income Tax and operating expenses (fuel, tolls, maintenance and so on).

Just as a rough guide, I myself work approximately 10-15 hours a week. Most of this time is focused on weekends which is when Uber is at its peak demand (either a single Saturday or Sunday or a mix of both days). I always bank around $400-500 a week after Ubers cut, but in real terms that is only $200-300 in my hand after all taxes and expenses are factored in.

You do reduce your tax liability somewhat via GST input credits and the ability to offset some of your operating costs against your taxable income, but you should air on the side of caution and set that 50% aside for all liabilities and costs.

This is not just a gig where you log on and make a bit of extra pocket money. It is a business and needs to be treated as such.

ATO has nothing to do with the amount of hours you work. You will pay GST and tax on top of your income, not hours.
