hi - another question on flat surge. They are rolling this out now in RI, and Uber is saying “for long trips the driver may get additional surge beyond the flat rate amount”.

Have any of you ever gotten additional surge $$ beyond the initial flat surge amount for a long trip? If yes, how long was the trip?

No that is a bunch of crap. Right after I got that message I had a bar surge and the ride was 20 miles in 29 minutes. I thought cool I'm curious about this. I saw nothing. I emailed customer support and asked for the details about "you might get a long ride supplement." I got a few canned responses before they cut communication. It's just a PR thing. It's not real. I think I mentioned it in this thread.

Back in the days I drove, when I found out a trip was going well out of the market, I simply told the rider I would only make the trip if they agreed to throw some extra cash my way to cover my deadhead back to Charlotte. I even made up a chart that I carried in the car showing my additional "return trip rate" to various cities around the Carolinas and Virginia.

Only had one person ever refuse. Typically got $40-$60 extra for trips to areas like Durham, Greensboro, Asheville, Columbia and the like.

The one lady that refused got pi$$ed and one-starred me. Fortunately, the guys at the greenlight hub said I had the right to negotiate for extra in a situation like that and got the one-star removed.

A couple of times before I stopped driving, I got a text the following week. It said hey, congratulations, you've been awarded additional surge for long trips.

It was a few dollars. I wouldn't go as far as to say I appreciated the money, as it was almost insulting that they framed it like I should be happy to get an extra $3-4 a week after the trip.

It does happen, but it isn't something that makes the new surge system ok. It's like someone punching you in the face and then handing you a bag of frozen vegetables.
