Hello fellow Uber ants.

I don't know if it's because I'm a Gen-X cynic or just because the world is getting more insular, but do you all find this constant eyes down at the phone, not interested in anything real world, a bit....deflating?

Don't get me wrong I know that many pax just want to not engage and use the time to check feeds, but I was a cabbie for 3 years in the 90's and I miss the conversation. I'm relieved when I get a passenger over 35 (especially male) as they'll at least ask how you are and hows the day etc and if they don't want to talk then thats cool, but at least we've engaged for a moment.

Most pax under 30 just slide in, mumble some inaudible greeting and then its tap-tap-tap glowface for the entire ride. So boring...

Another pointer as to how easy the takeup of robot cars will be. No driver to interrupt their filtered lives with "friends" via social media.

Engaging with humans is challenging for youngsters. They are repeatedly told they are NOT worthy of "social success" if they aren't wearing the right clothes, right perfume/cologne, makeup, look ripped/smashing.

So being able to filter social interactions is perfect, talking with a driver is not.

I laugh at the ones who start the ride all silent on their phone then about 10mins into the trip they put their phone down and start a convo.
It's like they have run out of notifications to check and now have nothing better to do so they'll now talk to their Uber driver.

I usually ask them what they do for work. Some really interesting conversations start that way. If they don't hit the ball back after a few tries I accept they are busy, not in the mood or whatever and just accept it and give them their preference.

Usually give these pax 3 stars
Why?. Riders should be able to use their time n the car however they like. They might have been busy at work all day and want to catch up on news and socials or just have a nap or some quiet time.

I hate it that riders feel compelled to talk because of drivers like you.

3 stars. Would you like to be 1 starred cause someone didn't like your banter.

And that's their choice, but it makes for an uncomfortable ride and it's not asking much to have a quick chat, instead of having their eyes glued to their phone and I find it rude. Vast majority of my passengers are happy to chat and it's very friendly and they get an easy 5 stars.

I thought drivers are suppose to drive and riders are supposed to ride. I know it not a limo but on a limo when you don't want to talk to a driver or even see the driver their is a window that goes up.

Riders should be allowed to just sit there happily on their phone or just think about what they are going to be doing for that day or whatever else. Riders are not drivers entertainment toys. Down rating riders because they are not entertaining is outrageous.

Drivers want entertainment and someone to talk with while they drive? Offer to drive friends and family to work and catch up that way. Be hard pressed to find a friend or family member saying "no" to free transport and you can get all the talking in that you like :D

When they say nothing at all.... They say it best, when they say nothing at all ;)

I reckon that was Apollo hair style back in the day :p:D
