Last Tuesday Valentine's day I got pinged, the address to pick up the pax was on the Interstate, I was about to called when he called me, he asked if I could bring some gas to his location, I told him I didn't carry a gas can but he asked me to buy one, fill it with gas and deliver to him and he would pay me. Also he told me I could start the trip on the spot, I had to go SB and then go NB since I had to turn back on the Interstate to his actual location. It was raining hard and I had no rides for over an hour so I decided to do it but I didn't bought the gas can until I turn north bound, the cost of the can and gas was $ 24.00 even. (they are expensive on the interstate). So I head back NB this time and found them like 14 miles from there. They was already freaking out since I couldn't contact them right away and it was already dark and still raining (once you pick up a pax the contact option disappears). But 45 minutes into their ordeal they got the gas the needed to drive to the nearest gas station. They gave me $50.00 when I gave them the receipt for the gas and told me to keep the change and also told me to keep the $16.99 gas can.
Total cost of not paying attention when you drive with an empty tank $ 40.19 gallon (3 Gallons)

This is when it pays to have a AAA membership, or at the very least an insurance plan that includes roadside assistance

The best thing about a AAA membership is it covers the person, not the car, you don't even have to be driving, as long as an account holder is present, they will offer services

I happen to have both roadside assistance on my insurance and a AAA membership, and very rarely would I ever need roadside assistance, though one time I was stuck driving my mother's SUV as my car was being worked on, the tank was on E, but I wasn't willing to put any money into it as it's not my vehicle

As I was driving, I noticed the SUV was lunging and slowing down like the engine was dying, I was able to pull over just in time before the engine died out, called AAA and they sent a truck out with a can of gas just enough to get to a station and fill up, I was able to contact my mother and use her card to fill up the tank. At that time, everybody I knew was busy and I didn't even have the rider app set up yet so I couldn't even do what was done in the OP, so if I didn't have AAA, I would have been screwed, the peace of mind alone is worth the $100/yr

I agree with you and actually advised the pax to try and make contact with a mechanic shop or a tow service, it would've been a lot cheaper that the price they paid and the time they lost also. He just told me to go ahead and "Git it Done", so I did.

I noticed the low fuel warning, but it not being my vehicle, I'm not putting a dime towards it, it's my mother's SUV, I was doing something for her at the time, it's her responsibility, not mine

Once AAA came out and I was able to get out on the road, I was able to get her CC and fill it up

I usually fill up at around a quarter of a tank on my car, so me running out of gas almost never happens

To Mike Damirault: what a cheapskate, ungrateful bastard you are. Your mother is letting you use her car and you weren't willing to put gas in it? My son would get his ears boxed if he copped that attitude. Unbelievable!
You know absolutely nothing about my mother or I, you have no idea what I have gone through in my life because of her

Not to mention, what was I supposed to do? My car was being serviced and I was only doing what she told me to do, I wouldn't have been driving it in the first place if it wasn't for the running around she made me do

I had to get my car jumped yesterday morning. Was already running late for work and last time i needed a jump, tow truck took 2 hours and costs $65. Insurance reimbursted it but i didnt feel like dealing with that.

So i called an uber. As soon as he accepted, 4 min away, i called and asked if he was cool to just jump me and that he could have the cancel fee and $5 cash i had. He was cool with it.

4 min to get to me, 2 min to jump and he was on his way with $8.75 with minimal miles and gas used. Had him start the trip and end it a block away, that way I could also give him a 5 star (he was 4.8 and could use it)

Worked out better than calling roadside assistance!

but at 39 miles and $70 he ordered select to get gas? What idiot would order select just to have driver pickup gas for them? An x driver would have been sucficient for that type of distance and tip he was providing.

This is way better than AAA. I got stranded one night on a gas gauge malfunction. Called an uber. But I had him pick me up, take me to the gas station, and take me back to the car while on trip. Whole thing took 18 minutes start to finish and cost me like $20, including me tipping the driver.

AAA or waiting for a tow truck is going to be at least an hour.

I actually do a lot for her, she barely needs to lift a finger

Like a lot of other Uber drivers here, I don't make much money, and being I have no other job than Uber currently, filling up a vehicle I don't own is an expense I can't afford

To be honest, I'm pretty respectful when it comes to driving her SUV, I always make sure to return it in the condition it was in before I drove it or better, and if that doesn't sound like much, she also let an unlicensed drug addict and alcoholic drive it and not only would he not put gas in it (the whole reason it was on E to begin with), but he would always trash it nearly every time he drove it (I even mentioned it to her and she just blew it off)

Being a shared vehicle, and a person driving it that shouldn't even be driving in the first place, I refuse to put my money towards gas that could be used by an addict to get his fix

If you put $5 wouldnt you reasonably expect mom to pay you back? Theres Uber broke and then theres letting the car run bone dry broke.

You uaed your moms card? Did she go out to the gas station to fill you up? How much time did this all take because you didnt want to spot your mom $5 in gas? The wasted time alone would have been work spending $5 to make it back home.

I still think AAA would be a better option, of course it would probably have taken longer, but aside from the $100/yr membership, anything from getting a can of gas to getting a tow when you're stuck or break down is completely free

Sure you can always request an Uber and see by the off chance if they are willing to give you a jump or get a can of gas for you, but there's always the chance the driver will refuse, that there is no Uber in miles, or depending on when they start the trip and how long it takes to get the gas, over time (and your luck) it could cost you more to request an Uber each time there's an issue than it would just to spend the $100 a year and have those services (and even a tow when needed) for no added cost

Actually I was on my way to her (she just got out of the hospital at the time and was in a recovery center), the gas ran out just before I made it to the exit, and there was a gas station near the center, so making it to the center to get the card and making it to the gas station was no issue at all

The only issue with just putting in $5 was there was no info on when I was going to get my car back and I wasn't sure what kind of running around my mother would want me to do

Like I said, my mother barely has to lift a finger, I do about 95% of all the errands and she spends most of her time watching television, I'm pretty sure in the end, I do more for my mother than any person is willing to do for their parents
