Pax canceled mid ride

2071 Views 28 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  LA Dispatcher
Hi everyone, I've been lurking a bit. I was driving in orange county, picked up a pax. We start talking and I ask him where we're headed and he tells me that he needs to get to a hotel. As I'm exiting the freeway the ride cancels and the Pax tells me that his phone died and that it must've canceled the ride. Knowing that this is bs and the app doesn't work this way I dropped them off at the nearest safe corner. I reported him to uber in the hopes that if he tries it with someone else and they also report him, it will get him kicked off the service.

Has anyone else had a Pax try to pull this?

Yeah, the guy probably gets away with doing that to new drivers. Uber won't deactivate him.

I figured as much but I figure that at least some new driver might read this and be aware that the app doesn't cancel rides when the Pax phone dies.

When this happens, you can just finish the ride, then tell uber what happened. The pax will be charged for the completed trip based off your gps record of the trip. Also inform uber that the pax tried to scam the system, stealing services is a crime, and request that you not be matched up with them again. Ive had this happen sevetal times, last time after delivering the pax to thier destination I called the police and reported an attempted robbery. When the officer showed up the pax freaked out, tried to lie about it, turned out they had a warrent out, they ended up getting a free ride downtown with the oh so nice officer. Read my byline...

Yes you did the right thing. Ride cancels then it ends too.

Curuous when did it cancel? Was it in beginning of ride or towards end?

Phone dying that ended ride Is such bs

We were just about to end the ride. The destination was maybe a mile after the exit? I'm guessing he thought that the app would just charge him a 5 dollar cancelation fee.

How long was ride? What did he say while dropping off? Or no fee cuz he cancelled.

Not even 8 miles. Took about 10 minutes.

My phone says ride canceled
I ask the rider what happened
Rider said that his phone died and that must've canceled the ride.
I tell him that I'll have to drop him off at the safest place I can.
He starts asking me how far away his destination is.
I give him some bs about how I don't know since the ride was canceled, so was the destination.

How convenient phone dies toward end of ride. Did you see his phone to see it really died lol?

No, I didn't see a reason to. I'm pretty sure that he was just lying about that though because usually phones make a sound when they turn off.

Phone died...BS

If it was a pool ride you could have went to the store got a new phone a new battery, charged it, installed the 4.3 star rated Uber apps, logged in, go online and the trip would still be there

Phone dying doesn't cancel the trip, regardless of whether or not it actually died.

Yeah, junkies in HB on Lyft.

Old scam.

The skilled ones make sure to:
1) call you and get a pickup at least 100 ft away from pin
2) have a solid destination entered
3) ask to drop off their friend or stop at ATM or something at a part way point
4) that's when it happens
5) that's where they actually wanted to go
6) their phone GPS was off the entire time
7) they raise some kind of fuss or otherwise distract you inside vehicle looking for stuff to steal
8) they blame YOU and/or U/L for ride being cancelled (in person), and claim they were never there to support
