In light of the article below, when can one reject a trip request without being harassed by TLC? Suppose someone puts a request to Pennsylvania, am I obligated to drive? Is there such a thing as a distance limit from New York City?
Uber driver after 70-mile trip from NYC to Jackson
JACKSON - A Uber driver who picked up three men in Manhattan was robbed at gunpoint on Sunday after making a 70-mile trip south to Jackson, police said.
Police have not yet located the three suspects, who fled the scene in a red Pontiac, and are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact Jackson police.
The incident began Sunday afternoon when a man who told police he was an Uber driver picked up three men in Manhattan, Jackson police said in a statement sent to news outlets.
The driver, who police did not identify, told authorities that he was near the destination in Jackson, a residence on Wilson Boulevard, when he heard one of the passengers on a cellphone trying to arrange a meeting with another person, police said.
Instead of stopping at the residence, the driver continued and made a right turn on Don Connor Boulevard, heading towards Bowman Road. This angered the three passengers, police said, and one of the men took out a handgun and starting yelling at the driver.
The driver pulled into the Forest Resource Education Center on Don Connor Boulevard. Police said that's when the suspects robbed the driver, stealing cash, a cellphone and the vehicle's keys.
The driver told police the alleged robbers threw the keys in the woods and then fled in a red Pontiac being driven by another person. The Pontiac left the scene heading in the direction of Bowman Road, police said.
Jackson Township police Lt. John Giovanetti was on patrol in the area of the Forest Resource Education Center at around 2:15 p.m. when he was flagged down by the driver.
Police described the first suspect as a black male who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with an Adidas emblem on it. He also had a backpack on, police said.
The second suspect was either a black or Hispanic male, who was wearing a red shirt, gray jeans and a shiny black jacket.
The third suspect, who police believe brandished a loaded handgun, is described as a black male approximately 6 feet tall, who was clean-shaven, had short, curly black hair and was wearing a tan jacket, white shirt, blue jeans and tan boots.
A spokesman for Uber, Craig Ewer, issued the following statement on the incident:
"We're in touch with this driver and with law enforcement, to offer our support and to assist in the investigation any way we can."
Police asked anyone with information to contact Jackson police Detective John Rodriguez at 732-928-1111.
