Online for 2 hours during the "prime" time and I get one ping, 2 minutes from me. I get there and the rider looks a bit under-age.. I ask how old she is and she tells me "15".. I tell her sorry, can't take you it's against the law (California law) and against the rules.. She looks shocked and surprised and I ride off.
I sent a support request and asked Lyft to remove the cancellation so it does not count against me and suggesting that they no longer allow this passenger to use their service against their rules and state law and that if they do allow her to keep using Lyft at least dont pair her up with me again.
I got a response 5 minutes later (LOVE how fast they are!) that says the cancellation would not count against me and they would not pair her with me again - sounding like she can continue using the service.
So the question: Do you know of any cases where Lyft will remove/ban underaged users or users (parents) that allow their kids to use their Lyft accounts?
PS it's NOT the statutory raep or dispensing alcohol/tobacco law.... If it's over 4'10" and has visibly passed puberty, you have NO reason to suspect and NO reason to ask.
I've known 25yo's who look 13, and 12yo's who look 25
Nobody had me take a course in identifying teenagers. Moreover, I have heard that Uber expressly FORBIDS asking for identification
If they're well-behaved, modest, and in non-curfew hours, DO NOT ASK
I care about California law.. I was picking her up at a High School, and she looked 14.. Any reasonable person with even half a brain would have every reason suspect she was a minor.
It's just the law that i'm concerned with.. I'm not about to take the risk of her claiming rape or any other inappropriate behavior - as has happened many times with Uber/Lyft/Taxi drivers, not to mention teachers, neighbors, etc - all when they are completely innocent.
FYI, taken directly from Ubermovement.com, showing how wrong you are about Uber:
In California, due to CPUC requirements, you cannot transport an unaccompanied minor on trips arranged through the Uber app. Keep in mind that in California, a rider must be over 18 to sign up for an Uber account, but if you believe a rider might be underage, you can ask them to confirm their age and let them know that you will have to cancel the trip if they are indeed under 18.
She's a TA until she informs me otherwise, and even then....i might just miss it entirely. deaf and hard of hearing mode on fUber, no such thing on Lyft alas, but have plenty of support correspondence explaining 1*'s handed out to thlse who can't respect "I cannot hear half of your directions", so....
Also, I have NEVER heard of a SINGLE California law that I could possibly respect in the least.
This state could possibly have been a pretty nice place ---- if we just wiped and shredded every law and regulation on the books, imported all our elected officials and public servants from the likes of Idaho or South Dakota, and started over!!!!
I find there is a human rights issue involved when sentient, literate, fairly high-IQ individuals who may well have taken and passed college calculus or physics classes are denied access to basic services by a government, even with money that same government has no qualms about letting them slave away in demeaning conditions to earn....
ESPECIALLY when it is a government that does NOT and could NOT possibly represent their interests as it does not grant them access to the electoral system, won't even properly let them sue it in a court of law without jumping through endless hoops, and yet feels a-ok with taxing them
Just wait until the account-holder (mom or dad) contacts Uber and says "that wasnt me i'm not paying" .. and Der-Uber takes back the money..
Has happened to me 100 times (not with Uber but with another service I provided in the past) and it sucks... and there is nothing you can do about it.
