I have only driven in downtown Chicago once but I'm looking forward to doing it more now. When I drove the one night there I noticed every parking place on the street required a parking sticker of some sort to park there. Since then I have been told that as long as it's night time on street parking is free? Is this true?

Is there parking permit that allows you to park anywhere on the street while waiting for pings? Or does each section require a seperatr permit? How do you drive downtown Chicago with out being able to park your car during slow times?

It all depends on where you are. You have to read all the street signs where you are stopped. Best bet is to find a gas sation or 7/11 lot to pull into and wait.

Since you're not from the area, never park in a free McDonald's (or other) lot and go across the street to get something. Some places will boot your car in the 90 seconds you're off property. Not everywhere.

Just better safe and paranoid than sorry and out of pocket $$$$.

If you park on one of the main streets, you don't need a permit. But watch the metermaids. You can always park in a walgreen's lot, but stay with your car.

If you are sitting in your car with the engine running, you are not "parking", you are "standing".
You can sit and wait in spots that require a parking sticker. Just make sure your running lights are on, so it will show in the photo that you were "standing", not "parked". The same goes for metered spots. If you see parking enforcement coming, just drive away to avoid hassles.
