Well, it's only my second week of driving and I've watched my 5.0 default rating plunge to 4.4 after just a few days of driving. I'd be more shocked had I not already read articles and watched videos on the subject of Uber's super-stringent rating system.

One line from a Daily Beast article on the subject stuck with me. "Passengers rate like they are using Amazon or Yelp". I'd have to agree. I'm sure a great many of them have no idea just how powerful those little stars are.

Now, bear in mind I do not dress in a suit and tie nor have a fully stocked snack and water bar in my back seat. I do NOT in fact know my town down to the last brick. I (when I remember to bring some) DO offer water, and I don't dress like a member of Marilyn Manson. If a passenger has a preferred way of getting somewhere, I turn the sound off on my app (doesn't work right half the time anyway) and rely on them to get us where they need to be. I'm never rude. I listen to their stories. I don't engage them in personal or political matters. I say "Good morning", "Thank you", and "Have a good one" to each of them.

I do realize and appreciate the idea of keeping the ranks clean of the rude, the confrontational.....avoiding poor representation of the brand. I get that and I'd say this is a good way of doing it. But the idea of cutting a good person just because not enough people 5-starred them every time is a bit excessive, especially since many are using this as a SOLE avenue of income - which thankfully I am not.

I got a friendly little reminder from UberLand that despite the fact that two riders 5-starred me last week (got tipped pretty generously too), I still had a below average score in their eyes. The very notion pissed me off at first, but then I thought.....

Okay, so I'm paying for my own gas to do with and they're taking the cut that they're taking. They call themselves a ride-sharing partnership, but lay down expectations that one might find with a chauffeuring service (which I would imagine pays infinitely better). Hmmm....not really worth getting mad over if they cut me.

That being said, I decided not to write the point-by-point response I was thinking of to UberCentral about my current lackluster performance under their banner. I'll just keep on keeping on until the day comes that I cannot log on anymore. I just decided to do this for a little extra cash on the side while enjoying driving my car (ya know.....like it says in the commercial).

Anyone else find their rating in a place you weren't expecting?

Don't sweat it yet. Stay away from high surges and drunk bar scene until you get to 4.7. No need for waters either. Just do a good job, have clean car and be friendly with good driving and it will get better.

I was unaware that there was a way to see the star rating of the passengers before accepting their trip request.

How exactly is this done?
I on the initial request that shows the distance, if you miss it there you can find after accepted request in the rider info contact page.

You said you will turn off the sound of your gps....the sound should never be on where the pax can hear it. Keep the radio low and pleasant(no heavy metal, hard rap, or talk radio). Keep your car clean and fresh with out strong air fresheners.

Uber compares full-time drivers to those who only drive a few hours a week, and tells the full-time drivers they are not as good as the Top Drivers. I've been rated as below average every week but one for the past 7 months, yet I have a 4.6 average right now. I really get tired of the insults Uber throws my way. Next week is my last week.

Oh please do give me a break. I'm driving people, not heads of state.

It's Uber, not Air Force effing One.
Uber pax expect to be treaded that way.
Try it and see what happens.
You ask for help and then tell me I am full of shit.
4.88 here and I drive the bar close hours for almost a year now. Those are the worst hours to keep your rate steady with the higher surge and drunk passengers.
I also do not give water or candy away. Just my car and a safe ride.

Knowledge of your area is key. Knowing when the GPS is lying to you is important, too. Obviously no one is going to know every back road and alleyway, but a good solid knowledge of your area makes you more confident, makes you appear competent, and relaxes the paxes.
Try sticking to the areas you know well first, then start branching out as you gain valuable experience. Don't just blindly follow the GPS, pay attention to your surroundings and learn where you're going, then you can begin taking trips where you know where you're going and don't need the GPS.
I do as many trips as I can without relying on the GPS. Lots of pax don't put in the destination in Austin, and locals expect you to know where certain places are if you're driving them for money. I do that pretty well, but sometimes they do stump me. I always admit it, and usually crack a joke with them about how they got me on that one. Happens about every 10 trips or so. I use the GPS more often to find their houses for pick-up than I do when I am dropping them off downtown. Hopefully this helps a little.

By the way, I don't offer water, mints or any other kiss ass stuff. I will tell people they can't eat in my car, nor can they bring drinks that don't have a screw on lid.
I wear cargo shorts and a golf shirt, and I play whatever music I like, though I do keep it lowered when they're in the car. My phone is Bluetoothed to the car, so pax do hear the Waze directions when I have to use GPS, and my rating is over 4.8 with over 600 rides. Be in control of your vehicle, let pax know, without being a dick, that it's your car and your rules or they can use the flatfoot express.
