Hi Neil. Dave here. Also a new driver in metro Detroit. Last night was my 3rd night. Pretty slow last night with the rain. I drive a Ram 1500. About 18 MPG. Not ideal for this but have twins getting ready for college so thought I would give it a shot. Maybe we can lean on each other and pass along any tips we come across

Holy s*** 18 miles per gallon I get 51 miles per gallon and hardly make enough you weren't even driving you need to rethink what you're doing with the Ram

Dave Welcome buddy.

I'm hosting an Uber driver round-table tomorrow at Cafe 1923 from 11am-noon tomorrow in Hamtramck. It's not a ***** session but a chance to meet face to face to learn from each other. This forum is exclusively for the *****ing and Amen for that. I'll host these on different dates and at different times if you cannot make this one. I keep a meeting on time and only for one hour. I'm new to Uber as well but am a quick study. Read the depths these forums have to offer: a lot of opinions and ideas.

Also, had two Uber drivers swipe my fares this week. I'm amazed that people blindly just get into other people's car. Different topic for a different thread I guess.

With a RAM 1500, just try to stay local somewhere to control your costs but Uber driving can be like herding cats sometimes. I tried staying east side last night (Shores & Pointes) but ended driving a woman to Plymouth.

Hi there. No not a Dr. but a new driver who welcomes any tips particularly on surge.
The only tip that I can give you and Surge is go the other way lol just kidding you just have to watch the map and don't try to rush into a surge area because if you drive in there with your App active it'll decrease the surge s for a sweet spot in Detroit try sitting as close to Randolph and Monroe as possible or even over by the Westin in but I've noticed that most of the time during surge you will get paint outside of the surge area if you don't put other uber cars between you and the outside area

Surge is such a generality. It's Pavlov ringing the bell and inconsistent. It's great when it applies but otherwise it's just kind of there. It's sheer luck of the draw. As a new driver, stick with the areas you know best first and branch out from there. I read posts where people drive 35 minutes and circle the airport like a buzzard. That's A strategy and if it works for others, then great but many overlook the time/overhead cost of driving 35 minutes each way. Are there sweet spots? Not really but there are concentrated areas where there are bars/stores and restaurants but that doesn't guarantee anything.

Well honestly the best strategy is wherever you start off at when you drop off the customer find you a good parking spot not too far away and sit there until the next rider requests if you go driving around trying to get into good spots more or less likely you're going to get pinged away from where you're going anyways it doesn't make any sense to try to get into a good spot when you just using more gas and putting more miles on your car to try to get a surge or a good area I found that most of the time no matter where I go it usually brings me back to an OK area

Hey, Neil and Dave! I'm Holly! I'm also new at this, so maybe I can join you guys on your tips and personal experience! I've only been out 1 night so far. I work nights so, this was something for me to do on my days off to gain a lil bit of extra income. Hope you guys don't mind having a 3rd person to share tips with! :)

Good Luck!

Welcome
I started in the Detroit area back in the summer. I still like it but am starting to weave in the odder experiences you'll read here.
I worked the Palace last night for the first time. The concert got out and I had one ping after another. The first 3 pings were to area hotels but they all were surge pricing. The 4th ping took me downriver. The pick up was crazy because there were so many people calling Uber rides and no riders. When I showed to pick up my PAX I had people begging me to take their ride, share their ride. It was nuts.

How was your first night out?
