Lost my job late last year so thought I'll sign up for Uber. Took 35 days to get the ok from Uber. Thanks for that.

25 to 30 years ago while at Uni I drive a Taxi part-time and then for a short period full-time so I know and understand the business.

I live in Wollongong and have only Ubered in Wollongong.

My average per hour take on the "meter" is $20.04. Only those who are honest to themselves can work out the fuel and tax elements in that equation. You know who you are, or do you?

The bigger problem is per km earnings. Unfortunately I have not tracked every km but two examples should explain things here in Wollongong.

Yesterday morning, Thursday. I live Fairy Meadow, 7.05am 15 min after logging on. I get a job from Woonona 8km to Wombarra 10.56km that pays me $16.72. Ok so now I'm in Wombarra, chances of a fare are zero, so I drive towards Wollongong. The speed limit here in Wombarra and for a good deal of the trip is 40 and dose not exceed 50 until past Thirroul. So by the time I get to Wollongong it's taken me 65 min and I've driven 32km.

This morning, Friday and the reason I'm at home drinking beer never to Uber again. I planned to log on at 11am thinking that with a break later in the day I would work until about 1am next morning. So at 10.40am I was on my way to clean my car in Corrimal and (nor logged on) the Uber app was showing a surge in Corrimal right next to my position of 3.2, so I logged on. A few min later whilst still heading north I gives me a job in My Keira, some 9km south. Yes I should have knocked it back. Unknown to me and unknown to Uber (thanks again) some two or three hours earlier a truck caught fire on the M1 and closed the Motorway. I drove down Railway Ave onto the M1 and stopped. It took me one and a half hours to get to the pickup address, I messaged the rider many times and told him the situation and how long it would take but he told me he was not in a hurry and this was the second Uber he'd and he would wait. The fare ran $7.82.

That's not the worst part.

Yes I understand traffic issues are part of daily life but the Uber app should have known about the traffic and showed red. I would have been alerted and could have made route changes. Siri was fully aware, why can't I use Siri to navigate?

I got another job before dropping off the passenger and that job again was 10km to pickup $12.41 job but this time when I swiped to end the job and give a passenger rating I had to do it no less than five times and errors came up and I whilst I had the next job address (another 7km) the Uber app would not navigate. When I picked up the riders and swiped to start I had to do it again four or five times and it would not navigate. When I dropped them in the city for $8.82 my previous days earnings, such as they were, disappeared.

10.45am to 1.30pm for $29.05.

Uber is treating us all, well you all now, like ****ing idiots.

You really need to track every KM, dead ones and trip ones. I have logged all mine in first 2 weeks ubering & it paints an ugly picture..... I have not logged on since NYE & running these numbers...

But if you're not ubering any longer you will not have to buy a logbook.

Rectangle Font Parallel Pattern Number

my detailed earnings are on this thread; https://uberpeople.net/threads/my-earnings-insight-after-2-weeks-ubering.303048/

I've learnt hard lesson about dead KMs in rural areas

With the kms you are doing just to get to your pick up location, you should be able to just breakeven.
The Wollongong and surrounding areas thank you for your community service.

seems like you having a tough time down there in the gong........

a little bit of advice - yes it could be harder to make good money in any area where there isnt a big demand for ubers or taxis.
so, the smarter option would be - instead of traveling 65kms at 40km/ph - maybe drive up the highway towards cronulla / shire area where its definitely busier
this is not unusual.
Its also why alot of drivers head towards the city or beach areas (easter and northern suburbs)

theres a few drivers on this forum who are pretty good.
i would say - ask them.... read the pages... understand how it works .....
your not going to get rich... but you can do ok if you are smart about it.

sitting on a highway for 1.5 hours ... ringing the pax and asking him if he'll wait but NOT asking him where hes going.....
thats going to have you drinking more beers earlier in the mornings every time !

ps: its surging at X2.4 in cronulla right now....... !

Yes it sad but I don't think Uber work well in the smaller city like Wollongong . Not enough population for the demand . And the pick up times and distance is too long . Maybe you should only drive in the busy time like Friday night , Saturday all day and Sunday day time only . I find these time are the busiest. But in the CBD area is a different game . Average pick up time is 3.37secs . And lots of pings Dosen't matter what day it is .

When I was active I did turn the driver app on when I was heading home from Newcastle. The pickup locations were always over 20mins away. Completely infeasible to accept the ride requests.

My only suggestion is use the 2 destination feature and head to Sydney to catch the peak hours then use the destination feature again heading home

Wollongong and the Central Coast (more so Wollongong) are both really bad areas for Uber. Wollongong has a smallish population that is isolated from Sydney suburbs by quite a few princes Hwy km, and it is spread over a large distance.

The lesser demand and the longer drive to pick people up kills you when they almost always only want to go a suburb or two away. You will often travel further to pick them up than you will take them.
Taxi's will never go to Scarborough, Coalcliff, Austinmer etc when people call them, because they know it takes 20 mins to get there in dead km, and then the rider will go 10 mins down the road to Bulli for $12. Uber on the other hand, Ants are so hungry for jobs, and they don't have the ability to pick up street hails or sit on ranks like a taxi so they accept these jobs, and riders know it. they have long given up trying to call taxi's, knowing they will never accept their job, but hungry Ants will come almost every time, so riders just use you.

Your Mt Keira rider knew too well that waiting for you was likely the only way he was getting a cheap ride, and so he did.

Central Coast, has a bigger population, also spread far and wide, and that big lake in the middle can mean huge distances to pick riders up. these locals also know hungry Ants will come from wherever in the hope of getting a fare, only to be disappointed time and time again when the job goes half as many km as the Ant covered to get to the pick-up address.

elle149 has offered sound advice. Go to Sutherland and the Shire for peak in the morning, usually you will get someone wanting to go to the airport, and then work around the suburbs during the day, set destination for the trip home in the afternoon.

There are areas where you can make a living driving for Uber, whereas in other areas you cannot. In areas with a small population, low density housing and high car ownership rates, you are going to struggle.

Driving up to Sydney is your only alternative.

sign up for the uber rider app, it shows you i think the 8 closest available drivers (you dont have to book a ride to see this)

so in the wollongong area you are competing with these other drivers for available jobs....

my advice if ur planning to make a serious attempt is to study the map for a week and get a feel when the busy times are and plan accordingly, this way you can maximise your time on the road

As the dodgiest ant of this forum I would have given you some tips but u already been cabbie hence I dont think that you need one.

All I can say if you do things the way they want you get used and abused. Bear in mind that there’s no progression in rideshare career.

The only times it possibly might be slightly feasible is when it first starts and there are not many drivers for a week or 2...

But after that its pointless... Uber continue to sign up more & more drivers on a daily basis in every city & town ... eventually saturation is a big problem.. hundreds of ubers drivers for a few fares... Uber don't care as they get their commission from whoever picks up the pax.

If 10 pax want a ride at the same time in Woolongong & only 5 ubers are on then Uber has to wait for the first 5 pax to be collected, the delivered & the next 5 pax to be picked up. Might take an hour for all 10 pax to be picked up & taken to their destinations by 5 ubers.

However if there is 100 Ubers for the same 10 pax then they will be picked up immediately, uber will get their commission quickly and the next pax have heaps of ubers left to get them too. So if you only get 1 fare a day, Uber don't care because they are still get 25% of every fare anyway from all the other drivers.. Uber always wins...

Mate, you need to go to the City area. I live in Penrith and initially tried doing Uber here. I wasted so much time chasing loose change. I now drive to the city and make better money there.

Simply put, Uber is works well in places where driving your own car is a hassle (expensive parking, traffic, etc).
It doesn't really work well in suburban location where people can easily park their cars at no cost, with nil traffic. The only time Uber works in remote areas is on a weekend night, ferrying drunks...

Hi welcome to the Uber world, drive around all day and not make very much.

Here is an old thread that may help you in earning some money around Wollongong.

Qantas fly in and out of Albion Park daily now, and a lot of passengers travel far.

View attachment 190005

I am just waiting at Albion now and the Qantas 747 just landed maybe I will get a trip back to Sydney, I really hope they are not going south
