Hi guys,

Been with uber for one year.
I'm getting on in years early 60s, but over Sydney and its traffic and expense and need a change of city.
I have no strings here in Sydney no home or partner well I did for nearly 20 years but that ended 3 years ago.
It has been a struggle ever since...feel unhappy here and looking for a change.
Can anyone recommend another city where uber is that I can live..NOT Melbourne.

Have heard good things about Adelaide or Hobart maybe Bryon or environs.
I just want a more sustainable life where it's more friendly and laid back.
Thanks in advance

Have you considered retiring to Thailand? Can be very cheap, and there is a considerable expat community living in certain areas (Phuket mostly, but Im currently in a little town about 300km from the Burmese border and there are also plenty of expats here too)

A (Thai) friend of mine just rented a room with aircon in Phuket and she is paying 5000 baht/month. Thats around 200 AUD. For living on local food you'de get by on around $10/day or less (for example, last night I ate the most amazing noodle/pork/dumpling dish from a street vendor.. it was $2.... washed it down with a $2 beer from the local 711.

As far as I know, foreigners over 60 are elibible for a 12 month visa, and you dont need to do a country hop after that, just reapply. And I think of you get an Aussie pension you are still eligible for it. The potential upshot is that if youre abroad for a year, you pay no Australian tax

Oh and since you're single... lovely Thai ladies LOVE older foreign men, because Thai guys are such assholes to them. Theyre often quite happy to be with you for having lodgings and food paid for them if youre a long term stayer.

Does Thailand have Über
Yes, in Bangkok. And in Phuket they have Grab, a similar app. But one could make money here just driving foreigners around on private guided tours, and he really wouldn't need to earn much.

Yep. Youre in your golden years. Why not enjoy it with cheap beer and young girls ?

That's my retirement plan anyway, but a lot of years away. In the meantime I'm hoping to start a business that will allow me to live here on 30 day visa's and do a monthly border crossing to renew. Bit of a pain, but Cambodia and Burma aren't too far for a monthly journey.

Sadly I'll still be an Uber ***** for some time to come

You should get out more often.
I'm not going to get into a discussion about the imaginary threats people think there are. It's mostly western world mind control.

Anyway, OP - what do you think about leaving Australia for South East Asia? If you've never considered it, I'm sure it seems like a big step, but the reality is that there are many, many people in a similar position of age and marital status that realise that they can live very comfortably through their older years, and with a beautiful younger companion (if that's something you'de go for, of course!). The one thing you would be sacrificing is cool weather though... and you would also need to be ok with rainy seasons

Despite being ruled by a Military junta since the army kicked the corrupt government out a few years ago, Thailand is quite safe if you don't act like a knob.

You may also consider Cambodia, which is even cheaper... but I dont know about foreign retiree visas.

Bali is another place thats dirt cheap if you live like a local, and if I recall, anyone over 60 can get Indonesian residency.

There would be no harm in you trying it out on a 90 day visa to see if Asia would be a good fit for you.
