So today was the first day i decided to buckle down and call the 888 number..lol jk i downloaded a really good auto redialer. Ill post the link
You can set this thing to 9999 redials with 0 seconds in between redials. It hangs up automatically without wasting time even when you get the busy signal. Id recommend you set the app and then do anything to past the time (watch tv, eat, play video games etc) but keep your phone near since you do have to type in your ss# eventually. So had this thing start about 8am nonstop until i finally got on hold at about 2:45. Was on hold waiting another hour until i got 'scott' on the line at about 3pm. Id estimate about 5k dials.

Anyways he got straight to business. Asked me to verify my ss#, name, address, told him im self employed and the last day i worked. Reason: covid19.

He didnt ask for 1099 or anything. Flat out told me since i am IC i wont get unemployment but i have to fill out application on labor.ny.gov for PUA (isnt it the same application?)

Let me add that i did do w2 work fulltime as well but i quit it by the end of 2018 so it didnt fall under the 18 month window. He said that it wasnt enough..

Then he said hes not sure how they gonna send the $600. He called this 600 Pandemic unemployment compensation (PUC) first time hearing this phrase..
Lastly, he wants me to "certify" my claim for UI on Wednesday and again on Sunday from the labor website

I have no idea what he means by certify and im really confused. He said to fill out application for PUA but i thought if you do application for UI it will carryover to PUA. Talking to this guy just confused me but i didnt have high expectations to begin with. Lets see if i can atleast get the $600. Anyways im gonna have to get back to work sooner than later.

PUA application is different then regular UI application. When you complete that PUA application first time at the end of it there you'll see all weeks from the day you stopped working and you'll need to certify all of them separately. I guess then you'll need to certify for the next weeks once in every week.

Yes, it says beginning on or after January 27, 2020. The PUA application is very straight forward and tells you right away that your eligible and says ‘submitted’ after you submit it. But DO NOT answer ‘no’ to the question of ‘are you otherwise able and available to work’, which is asked at the end of the details of every work week you didn’t work. You cannot edit this form, but you can start a new one. You can also upload documents with the form. But having two forms submitted with different data might entail a phone call to them. I doubt a nice agent will call you and ask to clear up a little discrepancy. It’ll probably be get in line on the phone!

Screwed, can't get through I just tried again. Pressed 5 then 1 towards the end and all agents are busy right now. Royally and anally screwed we all are. Oh well.
Why, my friend? You were eligible for the PUA, correct? Do you mean just the hassle of getting them, or did you run into a specific issue?

Another bit of good info is when you pull up the PUA application form, it already has your SSN on there; when we set up the online account, they didn't ask for our SSN to register (or did they? I don't think so). That could only come from the UI claim which, in my case, is pending.

The PUA application was accepted smoothly, and the very first question on the form was ‘did you file an unemployment insurance claim during the COVID-19 pandemic’. If the answer was ‘no’ it probably would tell the applicant you are not eligible. Now, it may be that a pending claim on UI has to go through as denied before the PUA applicant is enacted successfully. Indeed, however, the language there clearly says you can’t apply for PUA until you have been denied by UI, but some submitted applications of PUA the last day prove otherwise. Admittedly, I applied quickly when I found the new forms, and would gave waited if I had been less impatient. I don’t see a problem, but it may be better to wait if your UI claim is still pending. We will see.

Did ny labor refused your UI benefits? How did you find out? Mine says still pending. Shall I wait till they let me know or just apply for the pua?
Thanks.
