I am a new driver for the past two weeks and like going to the airport because I always meet interesting passengers. I am trying to figure out a strategy to get the quickest pick up for a passenger at the airport. Today I what is near the airport so I decided to go into the queue and realized that both Uber and Lyft were reporting 40-50 in line to receive a request. Normally I would not waste my time with so many drivers in the queue, but today I needed a break and decided to try comparing The Uber versus Lyft queue. I waited 45 minutes, which is way too long, and for the first 40 minutes it was a very similar queue for Lyft and Uber. Then in the last five minutes Lyft had been surging between 25 and 100% and had 22 cars ahead of me, while Uber had 23 cars one minute and then went down to 1 to 2 cars the next minute, so I waited three minutes and all of a sudden I get a ping from Lyft. How did I jump 22 cars in three minutes? My educated guess is that most of the drivers, drive for Uber and Lyft at MSP and get a ping from either company, then shut off the other app.
