MN Senate passes Uber, Lyft bill, sending it to Governor Walz's desk

It would raise wages and give stronger protections to drivers against being fired or "deactivated." Minimum compensation would be at least $1.45 per mile and $0.34 per minute in the Twin Cities metro area and at least $1.25 per mile for trips that start outside the metro. There is also a minimum fee of $5.00 for any transportation of a rider by a driver.

In future news....

....citizens and business leaders complain that Uber and Lyft drivers have flooded the Twin Cities area, clogging streets, sleeping in their vehicles and taking showers in convenience store restrooms. Driver on driver and race related crime has also increased significantly. Uber and Lyft state that by law they are restricted from suspending drivers who they feel are a hazardous to themselves and the public.

Public officials propose a TLC plate and commercial insurance requirement to limit the amount of rideshare vehicles in the cities, similar to what NYC has already implemented. Uber says this will increase costs on riders, reduce demand and cause even more driver hardship. Uber says ridership in the state has significantly decreased since the pay minimums were implemented several years ago as those costs naturally have to be passed unto riders, as many people just can't afford it.

Drivers are already doing that there and pretty much every other city in America. That’s how both of these companies get away with paying drivers next to nothing.

What will happen in MSP is there will be less rides to be had overall, which is bad for the rideshare companies bottom line and why they’re so strongly against it. But it will be good for rideshare drivers, especially the full timers who get taken advantage of the worst by the rideshare companies, as just about every ride they get offered will be profitable, which is almost literally the opposite of how it is now. As far as the beer money hustlers go, they’ll do less work and get paid more for the work they do. And most importantly, it doesn’t require drivers to be classified as employees to be paid more, which just swaps the government for U/L in the role of driver rapist.

Bottom line, this is a huge win for drivers at company expense and it’s about ****ing time the pendulum swung in that direction for once. Hopefully the governor signs it and more states copy MN in this regard.

>>The Senate and House passed the bill (HF2369) in the final days of the legislative session despite warnings from the companies that the regulations could cause prices to double and demand to plummet. Uber said it might even shut down operations in the state completely. <<<
'let us violate labor laws and exploit drivers or it will hurt us'

What freakin' arrogance.

One thing I’ll say is that at 36¢/minute I’ll quit *****ing about stops and drive throughs.
You want me to wait while you shop at Wally World? No problem…
You want to go through the drive through at Taco Bell behind 12 other cars? No problem…

That's actually how I feel lol. But I get 57c a minute for under 20 MPH

Before Lyft switched to Upfront Fares I was doing Lyft Lux and Lyft Black. The time rates were $0.46 and $0.68 per minute respectively.

I LOVED stops, especially on Black.

Had a dude get off a plane, hop in my car and want to go to a weed dispensary enroute to his hotel. Spicolli spent 20 minutes in there. Didn't bother me in the least bit.

If I heard people say they were hungry I'd volunteer to hit a drive-thru. Now unless there's cash involved it's not happening.

It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds.
They haven't taken any hit.
The OP's headline is wrong and misleading.

(The measure has not been signed into law by the governor - who has questioned it 10 ways from Sunday)

This why the rules for the NEWS forum do not allow made up titles or editorial comment in the initial post. It creates 'fake news'.

If U/L hadta' follow the same laws like everybody else, they'd go bankrupt. It's even cheaper for them to pay off & keep getting allowed to screw people over than it is to actually follow the laws.

At those rates OK. At base X & Lyft, WRONG! The only bad thing about drive thru is they wanna'eat it in the car.
Increases costs to riders and reduces demand as less people can afford it, more ants due to the increased compensation.

Next comes miminal weekly compensation...

I'm all for a fair compensation so drivers are not losing taking trips, however there is nothing in place to teach drivers to act conservative, so despite the pay increase they are just going to deadhead that extra pay away and be back whining for more.

aside from being judgmental, are you suggesting that it's not fair that some drivers are smarter than others when it comes to driving rideshare?

And what does earning a min wage have to do with driving smart or deadheading?

What he's saying is that there needs to be a plan to educate drivers so that they don't end up giving rides out to the sticks. Otherwise, they'll just return with the same complaints.
Looks like Minnesota people care about the drivers and each other.
How do we get this program in California?
California already had that.
The state legislature passed regulations requiring gig companies to fairly compensate workers by classifying them as employees which would have required them to pay minimum wage as well as benefits.

The good people of California passed a proposition to overturn the law the legislature had passed.
