And there it is...

It's rideshare folks, it's designed to leverage the general publics spare time to give others rides. It's not intended to be a chief income source, it's a gig job, nothing more. 94% are doing it PART TIME.

Uber is not a taxi service that regulates the amount of drivers and prolongs pickup times so the drivers and the company makes money.

Uber uses anyone anywhere, picking the closest available qualified driver.

If you want a decent income, get a real job with benefits. Ridesharing is a last ditch losing option to trade ones vehicle equity into cash.

Some of us in some places can make a living on it, buts it's not easy.

What that being said, and earning my Uber shill merit badge, there is something Uber can do to cater to those vocal 6% doing ridesharing as a main income source.

What we have in the meanwhile is a basis for minimum sustainable compensation, that's $1+ per odometer mile including tips. 75 cents for costs and 25+ cents for pay. Keep the deadhead mile rate 50% or lower. Gross $1750 per week or better on an annual average basis if one intends to rideshare as an main income source.

What we need is an app, but alas only 6% would need it.

Most drivers turn over in the taxi business within a few months, it's because the job sucks, the pay usually sucks and its a dead end job with no future and only hurts ones resume. Not to mention the risks involved. It's a good full time job for a retire, but the younger crowd should be doing more rewarding.

And the privilege of being paid substandard wages. The "this was never meant to be a full time job" argument is bullshyte. If it were true, then why are the quests structured in a way to get us to work long hours?

Typical liberal fake news. No where in the news article does it mention that Governor Walz is a DEMOCRAT. But the liberal fake news reporter does quote Governor Walz expressing “ I have spent my career fighting for workers,” because low-information voters keep eating off the same pity-plate of bullshit that Democrats “care about the little people!”
Furthermore, the fake news story mentioned that “before the governor’s action, Uber and Lyft drivers were seen protesting outside Walz’s office,” writing it in such a manner as to lead the reader to believe that the Uber/Lyft drivers were actually protesting against the bill and were encouraging the Governor to veto the bill, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Yep! Just some more fake news for the gullible liberal low-information voter to suck on. Enjoy!!!

Most Republicans were against this bill so where is THEIR concern for the "little people"?

First, exploitation of workers is wrong regardless of whether a worker is part time or full time, period.

Second, your asinine comments about what this job is "intended" to be are flat out incorrect. You keep babbling the same shit over and over despite being proven wrong again and again. From DAY ONE Uber has been recruiting full time drivers. They got FINED by the govt for false advertising for full time drivers.

Third, Uber CANNOT survive without full time drivers. They're the BEDROCK of this business. They do a vastly disproportionate share of the trips, especially during the all-important RUSH HOUR shifts. Uber would be out of business in less than 24 hours without full timers.

MOST of the trips in cities such as Seattle and NYC are being done by FULL TIMERS.

MOST NYC drivers are full time.

The fact that Uber and the other gig companies pretend like full timers don't exist is absolutely disgusting.

Are you full time?

Uber threatened to pull out of the greater Minnesota area but remain in the Twin Cities, the only area Uber felt it could operate at that higher driver compensation level. This is similar to taxis, only operating where the market can bear.

Uber is ridesharing, using the general publics spare time to give others rides to fill in those areas where taxis can't operate as well.

I can say this, if one has a certain vehicle or lives in an area Uber needs drivers, it does pay more, but likely only until it's needs are consistently met, then it drops the compensation.

Where I live there's an workforce affordable housing shortage, it's because the property is very expensive and it doesn't profit to build workforce housing. So in those areas and for certain vehicles like XL's and Comforts that don't get as much trip volume as X, the fare is higher and so is the pay.

I've also noticed that Uber pays just about what it costs per mile to operate a vehicle, or sometimes less even, so like a waitress job, requires good service for tips to survive.

Of course a lot of the poor can't tip, then the driver is getting below sustainable compensation, so it's up to the driver to decide "Do I do this trip for no tip (no pay basically) and convert some vehicle equity into cash or pass as I'm now only focusing on profitable trips?"

So the $1 per odometer mile with tip is that deciding line.

Who's forcing anyone to work for substandard wages?
We have 'full employment' right now because Bidens economy is functioning so well.

1) The voters of Minnesota have the government and governor they want. They voted for decisions like this. You and I are on the West Coast - why do we care? Why can't the citizens that live thousands of miles away have the government they want? Why do they have to have the government that you want them to have?
2) Since we do have full employment and jobs go unfilled, why don't those unhappy drivers in Minnesota just change jobs? What scares them about freedom of choice?
3) If they in fact find that they do NOT have freedom of choice where they are, why not move (like most everybody else) to a place where there IS more freedom (Florida). Isn't that what the 'illegal aliens' are doing? Running away from a bad situation in search of ... freedom and safety?

The greatest trick to date is Uber & Lyft convincing everyone that they are an "essential" part of the transportation market.

...and that they provide good jobs.

...and they reduce drunk driving.

Back when I was driving - that was the only way I could drive.

I started my shift with a Starbucks medium mocha with an extra shot of expresso, and two of those airplane bottles of tequila.
When I started coming down, my shift was over.
About six hours.

Well said. It’s not okay to say well we can underpay these people since they’re part time, seniors who need some supplemental income, or because they just arrived from a foreign country. Full, part time, or in between your expenditures on gas, maintenance, wear and tear are still going to occur. I don’t see anywhere in the 10k where dara/ Logan and executives are taking say a 40% reduction in salary/ compensation. I continue to beat the drum and say the scope of the argument needs to expand beyond on wages and include public safety. For years I’ve seen cars that are substandard and improperly maintained. These companies need to be nailed to the cross on a rate card and shouldn’t be allowed to take more than 15% of the fare. I wonder how much tax revenue the state is missing by allowing it to flow to the greedy corporations v gig workers. Most workers are low to middle class and will spend the $ they make. The corporate executives will shelter it and the companies themselves will reinvest the $ to further decrease their tax bill at the end of the year. Workforce doesn’t have the reach to partner with a think tank to study this issue and release white papers countering the gig companies position. If they did it would likely tilt the playing field to even. Instead, Gig companies hit the politicians with their money bags and progress is delayed while they work on the long game of autonomous vehicles.

Is it ok to say "I don't want to pay any more than I need to pay for labor. RS drivers are willing to work for nothing - proof is out there every day."
Have you ever needed a new roof on your house? Or a new starter on the car?
Do you seek out the MOST EXPENSIVE place to hire YOUR labor?
What if your mechanic is a migrant? Do you pay her a premium for the accent?

Do you know WHY? Because drivers want to price themselves out of the market with artificial price protection. Like rent protection laws and subsidies this will distort the fragile supply/demand curve.
"These companies" see the handwriting on the wall, and unlike you, they are preparing for it. They dislike you as much as you them. They gonna fix it.

Don't look to the government or Uber to make your life better.
YOU can do it.

that’s where you’re incorrect. Capitalism needs guard rails otherwise you run into the situation you do now. There’s a reason the cab industry which is what this is minus the street hail has a floor. Without you run the risk of unsafe conditions and congestion which is why it was always regulated like it was. We have rules and regulations precisely so we don’t get into the situation we’re in. Every single industry has regulation whether it be osha, faa, transportation network etc precisely so labor doesn’t get exploited to no end.

@UberBastid this is a side hustle for me so I’m already quickly preparing for the reinvention and displacement of many white collar job which will rapidly take place in the next 5 years. I still don’t believe in exploitation and I don’t make excuses for it. I hope you have something else to fall back on.

If you’re using labor that is following local rules and regulations you are likely paying more than using someone undocumented or who’s working under the table. That’s just the way it is and how it’s always been.
