Is it the 7g Tronic ?
Mercedes engines and gerboxes are proven very rarely do they fail and especially with 70k on the clock , the first thing you should do is change the gearbox oil as even the slightest of debris or slug can make it go crazy I have over 10 years ownership experience with Mercedes in particular with the e class I've had two including the w212 when was last gearbox oil change do u take it for private service or main dealer ?

It's all main dealer 5 stamps. Due in 5000 for gearbox oil change. Last serviced with Mercedes 14 weeks ago. Tool to Mercedes this morning. I get recovery through Mercedes as a continual main dealer service perk. They said I can have a licenced courtesy car for 3 working days of work carried out at Mercedes. I'm waiting to here what the damage is. If new gearbox will be thousands so will wait and see before taking on the hire car. Might have to take is to a bosh certified garage to save money if it's big as I'm an uber driver and as we all know money has been bad this year . It's a 7 geartronic

D1991, from your Merc experiences how were the 5 speed tiptronic auto boxes (for 3.0 CRD) that were fitted to Chrysler/Jeep vehicles around 2007?

Just bought one with 60k miles and just done transmission filter, gasket and fluid change.

Are these fairly bulletproof auto boxes?

I've heard recently of some 64 plate E220 auto boxes getting problems after 60k miles on Exec circuits (sensor problems but under warranty)

My mate had issue, same mileage. It were some seals inside and he paid £700 at Merc Heathrow with 1 yr warranty.

I've got 62k and some strange things started happening. On accelerating it gets stuck in 2nd and jumpes into 4th after I take foot of pedal.

Haven't had a problem with the gearbox on my 2013 W212 E220, for 136,000 miles.

Hope the new 9G in my W213 will be just as trouble free during my ownership.

Hogster I had the 2003 E320 Cdi with a 5 speed auto, not sure if its the same one, did about 217,000 miles in it, no problem, had the gearbox oil and filter changed every 45,000 miles though at an independent specialist.

Many thanks UberExec Driver, well that jeep should see me through my driving days then. I'm sure that's the same engine & box as E320 cdi

Apart from servicing the auto box, I had both Limited Slip Diffs, transfer case, brake hydraulic system, engine all serviced and coolant drained & replenished.

9 year old jeep goes like a brand new car, fully loaded too

I hope you get your auto box sorted out without forking out too much cabbie2B.

Sensor problems can cost money as well as the electronic clutches on some newer boxes as I found out on my ph motor.

I'm glad this jeepster has the auto box with old style torque converter, uses a bit more juice but should last well (I hope!)

Thanx Hog. Not bothered much as forked out £1800 for 2yr extended Merc warranty covering all elec and mechanical faults.
May be lot of money but if autobox goes wrong that's £2-3k fix or replacement.

Also my mate prior to box issues had a coolant loss issue and Merc replaced all cooling system parts...radiator, all hoses, sensors, valves,.......covered by extended Merc warranty.

It's good to have peace of mind with an expensive car

Merc's warranty is pretty comprehensive and worth having, good move bro

I tried Mercedes and several others to get extended warranty but didnt want to risk spending money, 80 a month, for them to say no as its private hire as none would touch it. Turns out 1100 quid sensor and Mercedes as good will gesture will pay 50% but not parts in uk and have to be shipped from Germany. Weeks holiday. Annoying as is more busy than anytime in last 6 months. So loose a weeks money too. No point hiring.

I take it their business lease cars have full cover though, even on a 3 or 4 year lease?

For very good reasons MB recommend to flush the 7g after the first 75.000 km. A few 7g in our cabs here had trouble, but most of them were gladly under warranty.

Since 212-facelift it`s written in the servicebook as fixed part of the 3rd service.
