TLDR; I drove half hour to a location today, waited 2 mins then called PAX, PAX said he thought he’d cancelled and isn’t at location so I cancelled, I contacted uber but they said because I didn’t wait 5 minutes I don’t get any cancellation fee.

I drove half an hour to a job today, I had to drive up the expressway to get there. The uber app said it would take 22 minutes, but with almost no traffic it still took half an hour and was a super far away place.
I shouldn’t have accepted the job 22 mins away, however it was a quiet night and I thought maybe I’d help someone out if there wasn’t any other drivers around able to drive him.

I get to the location, drive around, no pax or any people anywhere to be seen. Deserted place. After 2 mins, maybe 3 minutes I called the pax and he was clearly drunk, I asked if he was at the location and he said “No I’m not there, I thought I cancelled the trip. I wanted to cancel, I meant to cancel .”

Contacted uber, they said I can’t receive cancel fee as I didn’t wait 5 minutes. There would have been no point of waiting rhough, since pax said he was not at location and meant to cancel and didn’t require me to drive him.

Afterwards it took me an hour to drive home no jobs on way home because the place was so far away. 1 I won’t be making the mistake to accept a job 22 mins away ever again! Also won’t forget the 5 minutes rule.

Love it when someone says that they were made to do something.

Let's get this right, you saw the pickup was 30 minutes away and you chose to tap the accept button, put your car in drive, and then drive 30 minutes. And the most idiotic portion of your story is that you didn't wait 5 minutes (discussed a gazillion times on this forum) to collect your cancel fee.

With the new surge model and how Uber is shafting us all, all requests that are > 8 minutes away should not be accepted.

If the rider is an idiot and says that he "thought" he cancelled, let him know that he needs to cancel. If he refuses, ignore his calls or texts for you to cancel because it's going to charge him the cancel fee and wait the 5 minutes.

The worst part about this entire situation is that you did not just lose the cancel fee, but you lost being paid the miles and minutes it took you to drive all that way which I am assuming would be about $10-15.

Forget the *****ing and whining dude, why in the world for all that is great why oh why would you drive 30 minutes to pick up a paxhole ? Please please enlighten us
As I said in my OP it was a quiet night, the uber app told me pick up location was 22 minutes away and would a long 30 mins + uber trip, I wanted the 30 mins + long trip.

Like I said I've learned my lesson, no 20 minutes away jobs.

No, it said it was 22 minutes away on the app! I said this in my original post.
I swear on my life it said 22 minutes on the app and it turned out it was 30 minutes because they lied.

Yeah I hadn't driven for uber for about 2 weeks and the 5 minutes thing slipped my mind. I'm not on this forum every single day of my life, I've just checked it out a few times.

22 minutes/30 minutes, it's the same thing when you don't understand what to do to collect the cancel. DO NOT ACCEPT anything greater than 8-10 minutes away.

I think Uber system in Labor day malfunctioned. I also accepted a ping 8 minutes away from my home. After I got there and asked the resident at the address, they said they never requested Uber. I called the pax number and the pax said he was not at the location where I was, but in a different place. So, I canceled. Once I left, the same pax ping again in a different location 5 minutes away. I went to pick him up. Apparently Uber system was malfunctioned yesterday.

I meant in Memorial Day, not labor day.

I love it when people don't bother to read my original post then reply... (sarcasm)
We did read it. You didn't follow the rules. Probably because Uber does such a bang-up job of training new drivers.

No 5 mins., no cancel fee. Always wait the full 5 mins. After arriving. Unless it's Pool. Then it's 2.

Call the money you list "tuition" and learn the lesson. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean it's incorrect.

Do you still get the cancel fee if the rider cancels under 5 min? My thought is no?

I don't call/text the pax until 15 seconds before the final timer is run out. If I don't get a good answer, I cancel, just so the pax doesn't "remember" to cancel on me after I've driven 5 minutes and waited another 3-4. Maybe I'm mistaken that I wouldn't get a cancel fee unless the timer runs out?

Part of your lesson should be "wait 5:03 minutes THEN cancel" ...
And always take a screenshot when the red "Cancel - rider no show" box pops up on the screen BEFORE tapping it and choosing "Rider isn't here" or "Rider no-show" - that way you have proof in case Uber tries to Screwber youber. ;)
