Admittedly the airport has improved but it's still a dogs breakfast. Get to T1 drop off point and there's lack of Drop off bays. Traffic lights that are on a timer and going red when there's no one crossing. A stupid keep clear zone to allow Taxis to push in. It's one bottleneck disaster. This place is still so backward!

T1 is a joke more so now than it was before.. Why didn't they just top/bottom the arrival/departure areas like almost EVERY other major airport??.
Give it 5 years and it'll all change again, another $50 million wasted.

We have Go West busses parked in our Pick up Zone on T3/T4. Parking Officials turn a blind eye, toothless [email protected]%#ks
I actually had a Connect or Transperth bus parked right where the rideshare pickup is at T2. Arrogant bus drivers. As for those Connect Buses, I don't think they can go faster than 40kmh

The reason they have the red light is (1) to stop the mess they have at T3/4 where the constant stream of foot traffic on the zebra crossing causes bottlenecks and (2) to only allow a handful of cars to get through at a time so as to prevent the drop off zone from being completely flooded. One problem is that the attendants are lax in allowing cars to sit there waiting and people having long farewells with hugs all around. Thirty seconds should be the maximum time allowed.

You wouldn't understand just how bad our airport design is unless you've been to a good one to make a comparison. My favourite airport is Singapore which is truly outstanding. You cannot fault it and it's rated number one in the world most years.

Consider how long it took them to complete what was actually built. We'd still be waiting if they went with a top/bottom setup, lol.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. Having the lights go red when there are no pedestrians is worse for congestion than having a zebra crossing. The problem at T3/4 is you have two lanes of traffic merging into one, that's the major cause of congestion when it's busy. When it's busy at T1, you end up having two lanes of traffic trying to get across to the first 12 bays on the left. Having bays on both sides of the road would have been a much better idea.

In my view, T2 is probably the best setup at Perth Airport. It's very compact, it has more bays that any of the other terminals, and it's extremely easy to circle around again if need be because of the roundabout at the entry/exit point.

Perth is ranked 75 in 2016, compared with Brisbane at 17, Sydney at 23, Melbourne at 25.

Well Australia is renowned as being a half brained nation. When you get your citizenship you are lobotimised. Half your Grey matter removed. Pretty much sums this society up.

So why did you come to Australia, and why are you driving for Uber in a backwards country town if your intellect far exceeds the general populace? That doesn't sound like a smart move, you could have gone somewhere that was full of peers. The fact is, we do comparatively well with the rest of the world for a "half brained nation". I'm amazed at how many overseas students study in Australia to get a "half brained" education, or how many people move here to improve their quality of life. We must be doing something right, despite everything the Aussie bashers say.

Well sure, it could have been designed much better but given the constraints the red light is probably the best method of rationing the limited space available. The problem is the number of people just sitting in their cars waiting for their friends to come out; last night I mentioned this to one of the attendants who then started to get busy ushering recalcitrants off the bays.

Yep, my last overseas posting was in West Africa in the area of the ebola virus. Beautiful country and very friendly people but you wouldn't quit Australia for quids after going to places like that. Corruption and lack of infrastructure and education makes the whole economy unworkable. I nearly stepped on a snake there and would have been dead if I had as there are no ambulances or hospitals anywhere.
Must admit though it's very frustrating seeing Australia not reach it's full potential with our politics the way it is.

It helps if the security people actually do their job. With only ~16 bays at T1 (compared with ~50 at T2, which is not as busy), they can't afford to have people just sitting there waiting for pickups.

Most modern airports now have two levels, one for departure and one for arrivals so that arrivals and departures people don't get in each others way. Similarly, the road at the front is 2 levels, one for departure and one for arrivals and no pedestrian crossings. Pedestrians are carried on escalators either over or under the road in a tunnel.

Yep, that's the most efficient setup. We just went through a major mining boom without seeing such an upgrade, so it's hard to envisage when it's likely to happen in the future. We'd need to see substantially more flights through the airport I imagine.
