Well here's a story I never wanted to tell... tonight I was assaulted by an Uber passenger & crashed my car.

Picked up just after 1am on 5th & Olive in Banker's Hill... two guys, one older (50's?) male who called the ride and his younger (late 20's?) friend who was sitting on the ground when I showed up. My gut said cancel the ride.

Turned right on Palm and right on Sixth and the younger guy in the back seat starts puking out the window. We haven't even gone two blocks, so clearly these guys aren't getting a ride for 10 minutes. I pull over and tell them to exit the vehicle. The guy in the back seat is still puking, and the guy in the front seat doesn't move.

"Please exit the vehicle or I will have to call the police."

Still nothing. Sterner now.

"Exit the vehicle or I'm calling 9-1-1."

The rider finally says "Fine, call 9-1-1." I reach over and open his door to hopefully show him this is not a joke, and he beligerantly accuses me of touching him.

"Don't touch me!" and he throws a fist at me.

"Alright, alright!" I exclaim trying to get him to calm down. It doesn't work. He starts yelling and screaming and increases his blows to the side of my head, and I realize he's gone off the deep end. Seeing very few options, I unbuckle my seatbelt and bolt out the door trying to get away from this crazy person. As I start running to find a nearby house to call the cops, I see my car rolling away as it was still in drive, a crash imminent.

Some asshole in a nearby houses denies my plea to call 9-1-1, so I flag down a car and a guy helps me call 9-1-1. He takes me back over to my car where the guys have fled the vehicle, which is stopped against a wall with substantial damage. Police are on the scene.

I get my phone from the car and see the Uber app is still on trip, so I am able to give the officer the name of the man that assaulted me. While cops search the area for the suspect, I suggest to the lead that we can call him from my phone. He doesn't think the guy will answer, but we try... and another cop finds the guy's phone in my car, alongside one of the guy's shoes. Assault-erella.

My car is driveable but has minor damage on the bumper and major damage to the passenger side mirror and rear door. Looks like I'll be sitting on the sidelines for awhile.

Luckily, this guy's punch is about as strong as his intelligence. I have a few bumps from the 5-10 hits I took, but I'll be fine.

So... how was everyone else's Thursday night?!

Sorry about your misfortune, but your ok, no serious injuries and your car is repairable. Always follow your gut instinct when dealing with strangers, especially at 1am and when alcohol is involved. You just learned a valuable lesson, which is people suck.
I've done over 5,000 rides. If I drove away from every drunk person, I'd make very little money. Sometimes the gut is right, sometimes it's wrong. 1 out 5000 riders assaulted me. Most people are ok. :/

I hate when that happens.
Classic.

Hope all ends well and you get back on the road, if they have his phone, more of a chance they can get leads
I don't see how this man will not get arrested considering they have his phone, and hopefully they get his full name and contact information from Uber.

I'm more curious about any police action and if the **** was arrested.

If you aren't armed when you drive you ought to be. I'm a pocket knife and pepper gel at a minimum kind of guy. I make it a point to be able to draw either from the seated position and leave and arm free to deflect and distract as the other draws.

This is a perfect example why I wouldn't just kick people out of my car. You never know what can happen. You see videos of drivers doing crazy $h!t, but then you have the riders doing crazy $h!t as well. No one knows. Unless I'm in danger, I wouldn't just stop the ride because of people's behavior. If you gotta puke, I'll pull over but I won't keep driving with them puking.

Why not use your phone that was an inch away from you to call 911? Why leave your car and your phone unattended with 2 drunk guys in your vehicle while the car was in drive to go knocking on a stranger door in the middle of the night to use a phone? Why do you call someone an asshole for not trusting a stranger pounding on their door in the middle of the night?

UPDATE!

Lots of comments will I will respond to later. Just wanted to let you guys know how unexpectedly GREAT Uber is being so far. I received calls today from multiple senior management at Uber, and they are waiving the deductible for this case and have all given me their personal cell phone numbers to follow up if there are any issues in the coming weeks.

The car is at a great auto body shop now awaiting the insurance claim's go-ahead which will hopefully happen on Monday, and in a perfect world the car will be back to me the following Monday. I have rented a car for the next week to do Amazon deliveries in the meantime to get some sort of income. I also have a meeting with a lawyer on Monday to discuss the civil charges I will be pressing against this passenger for loss of income and pain & suffering.

I was interviewed by Channel 10 news and they'll be running a full report at 11pm. I'm happy they understand that this story is not a "Dangers of Uber" type story and merely a violent person acting out that could have happened anywhere. Can't believe I'm defending Uber after all the detrimental things they've done to all of us, but in this case they've done nothing wrong.

Thanks for all of the kind words, guys, it means a lot.

So did you give yourself a good tip, 5* and nice feedback?

They clearly are afraid you'll sue. Uber is never nice unless they think it's in ggeur self interest.

How is this NOT a "dangers of uber" story? Would you pick up strangers who puke, and assault you, if not for uber?

Good story, but any attorney will tell you to shut the ***k up.
It look like you (your car) damaged someones property, your car has a couple thousand in damages, you took a beating. There is a lawsuit coming. So stop posting details in a public forum and contact an attorney.
Glad you are OK.

I keep ziplock freezer bags in my door pocket for quick deployment and have a little preventative vomit schpeil for people that look even a little wonky. I am hyper vigilant about it, but sometimes you just cant tell or get distracted. That is pretty bananas to wreck your car tho. Glad you are ok, uber are not being difficult & you are keeping a good attitude about it. I actually feel pretty safe out there for the most part too, mostly from the way I run my show, but realize there is definitely risk no one can completely control. Good reminder that there can be a very fine line between assertively not taking shit off people, and escalating a situation. I would really watch letting a car go out of control without a driver though, even at low speed. I hate to think how this could go if a pedestrian or the pax were killed somehow in this scenario. I have slammed as hard as I could on my brakes and really gotten everyones attention once though. I can understand this is likely easier said than done if you have fists raining down on your head!
