We are going to have act tough as a collective of drivers. Don't turn the apps on until the surge is at least $8. If they are charging a lot and taking it all, default to cash rides and pick up the people who just want to go home and be fair to the drivers. They are playing dirty, so must we.

While I agree in general with what you are saying, suggesting to uninsured drivers that they do cash rides is very bad advice. Especially on NYE when the roads will be filled with drunk party crowds.
It would not even take an accident for a driver to lose everything. Something as simple as a pax tripping and bumping his head on your car could do it, or a pax slamming the car door on their own hand, or gagging on their own puke.
Believe me, when medical bills come due and you get to court your "friendly" ride will not be so friendly any more.
U/L will certainly deny coverage, and your personal policy will most likely do the same.
If you want to go this route make sure you have commercial taxi insurance and permit.

Why wait for surge when they will just reduce the regular fare portion to offset it?
Reduce it how? Just don't take long trips, then there is no real way. If the average ride pays $4-6 then a $10 surge ride is going to pay 50% more even if the fare is reduced to $0. Can't hardly reduce a fare that was almost nothing to begin with.

That really is the only solution, I agree. The last time we had snow in my area, Uber was offering $7 surge, but the trips they were offering were like 15+ miles total for $15 or less INCLUDING surge. So they really did just chop the fare to account for the surge. My point is don't think that surge on NYE is going to be any sort of windfall. Those days are over.

And here I was thinking they had pretty decent incentives for the night. I'm looking at 17 rides for a $345 bonus on uber. That's pretty much guaranteeing me $500 for at most 6 hours. Rest of the time I'll be checking Lyft to see what they have.
What market are you in? No Quests being offered in Phoenix, Just a $5 boost in a really limited Bonus Zone.

I agree but a short window of $25 surges will happen in most big citys. Today its dogshit... we used to get 5x to 11x plus @80% 70% xl

I'm in RDU.

We have a Sat. night one, 9 rides for $150 and Sun. morning, 8 rides for $185. The flip side is that they will probably have so many drivers out for this that there won't be any surge.

Seems that some markets are getting good or great incentives and some not so much :(

I'm wondering if it is also per rider. Here in San Antonio, about same population as RDU, nothing. I haven't been driving much because of a tire issue. Will take care of it next week and then it's back on the road.

So uber is offering a $2.50 boost for new years eve limited to places I know for a fact are going to be surging.

Even on new years Eve I doubt I can manage more than 2-3 rides an hour because that's the market.

I'll be getting base taxi rates and probobly making more per fare. And I don't doubt I'll be getting more fares either.

Taxi driver's don't need to find Bob at the corner of Orange/pine street that you can't even get to. All I have to do is find a passenger who wants a ride. Given that disney is closing later than normal we'll have both higher NYE numbers downtown plus disney running later than normal AND at record numbers for the year, at the same time.

It's going to be a perfect storm for surge hitting everywhere at about the same exact time.

Personally I'll be down at disney world

Seems like a good idea to me....
Less drunks and more families.
