...I got the 2-for-$4 Croissanwich deal at Burger King, and gave the extra one to a guy in a wheelchair he probably stole in order to look more needy.

He was like, "do you happen to have a coffee with that? How about some spare change?" with a look of disappointment.

Made me regret it instantly.

How about a laugh and a buck for the joke, and a coffee for entrepreneurship. Now that was a true American.

Not sure what you are complaining about. Unlikely that the playbook “Pity - paltry gift- obsequious thanks” would, or should fly with folks raised to be proud Americans.

Half the stuff I offer to the homeless is turned down. Nut allergy, diabetic, just not fond of tuna ... etc. “How about a coffee or cash”. “Nope, never give cash”.

I have extra. They don’t. I share.

More power to them if they can get more out of me.

I agree, I have more compassion for the homeless now than I normally have. It must be a living hell for them right now. No access to restrooms, little food available, no one to panhandle from.
But, why push the envelope? You gave him an inch and he took a mile.
I had my very first Uber eats no-show at delivery. So I had curry in my car. I know where the homeless hang in Palo Alto but of course they've vanished now. I ate the samosas and the naan bread but the curry was too spicy for me. Sure wish I had had a homeless person to share it with
