Back-to-Back Rides
A big factor in reducing Surge involves back-to-back rides. It allows for drivers to "stack" a 2nd ride when they are in the last few minutes of their current ride. This means that 2 passengers are effectively assigned to the same driver for a few overlapping minutes.

This plays a big part in reducing Surge because the system can now "balance" the number of incoming requests with available drivers more effectively. If there are 100 drivers in an area and each of them have a rider in their car, we can suppose that 25% of them are in the last leg of their current ride. So adding new requests at the end of the rides that are ending is like instantly adding an extra 25 drivers

Got ^^^^^^^ In my email Subs. I think we NEED to start selecting 'STOP NEW REQUESTS!' Immediately after accepting trips, once you drop the PAX, select 'KEEP DRIVING'.

Monitor everything. Sometimes that stack has a higher surge, and it is locked in then. Hitting 'stop new request' at the wrong time, can lose the driver some money too.

Why worry about surges when you are getting stacked rides. That's the problem with a lot of drivers. They worry about tips.....they worry about surges. Log in, drive people around, then log out. If you drive without worrying about tips and surges, then when you do get a tip or surge it will be gravy.

Treat it like a business, fübr does. You're an independent contractor who if you just "drive" then you are not maximizing your profitability.

In defense of everyone who doesn't agree with you: You sir drive SELECT.

It's a mixed bag honestly... I drive SELECT but I will accept UberX at 2.3x or higher. Often I'll drive somewhere rural on an X surge (great trip) only to get stacked over and over with X trips.

The issue is that Uber hides the ride type and surge level (and destination obviously) so you're somewhat forced to accept and then cancel if it's not what you want.

I don't mind popping up early as the only car in the middle of no where at 4am that's more money for me. However, that's only if pax see me as SELECT and not cut rate X.

I agree with you on me driving Select. But driving Select vs X is not that much of a difference when you break it down. The demand is less. I don't do as many rides but I still have to wait somewhere for the rides to come to me. I spend about 55 hrs. a week online. Most of that time I'm sitting and waiting, either at home or Buckhead/Midtown. At the end of the week I average $700 - $800 (between Lyft/Uber) with 24 -30 trips. That's a lot sitting. The demand is very small near my house so I have move elsewhere to get rides without riding around wasting gas (especially at today's prices). Having said all of that I don't chase surges, I don't wait to log on until there is a surge, I don't stop stacked surges, I don't worry about tips and I pick up all ratings paxs. Doing of that means losing $$ somewhere. The only pings I don't accept are the ones 20 minutes or more away unless I get gut feeling. Usually that happens because I might be the only XL/Select in the area around 4 am.

At 4 in the morning it's Select only for me.
They do show you the surge and the ride type.
It's on there.
Not on stacked rides or at least not every time... Sometimes it shows and sometimes it only shows an incoming ride alert. IDK if it's an update flaw or something else.

Also if I am somewhere that is surging 3.2X+ I'm not going to wait on the one unicorn who requests SELECT.
And if that 3.2X UberX pax wants McDonald's I negotiate a fee and let that 38 cents a min count up.
But if Atlanta party traffic + McDonald's + rural Georgia = I'm in the middle of no where at 4am I have no choice but to be on UberX... Because I accepted a 3.2X UberX to begin with.

Uber needs more driver tools like a only send me 2.3X+ slider. I know the coding is there because Uber has a surge alert slider that never works for me.

I agree, I wish Uber would give us a couple of filter options like you mentioned allowing Select, XL and etc some criteria that we will accept X trips. I do like how they changed it so we can go back and forth easier and without going off line or even in the middle of a trip changing it which in some ways does prevent the "stacking". When I do take an X trip, the first thing I do after the starting the trip is go in and uncheck X/POOL so when I finish the trip I will come back up as Select only again and if I happen to land in the middle of big red spot then it's easy to go back in and turn X/POOL back on. But definitely would like the surge filter and maybe a ratings filter also.

Don't run X ... stay with Select X is a looser bet when you have a select car.

Not always there are times it benefits me or when the surge is above 2.7 (which roughly equals select) especially if sitting in a queue and not number 1 or 2 then will take it. Yes there are the unicorns out there but they are exactly that when the surge starts getting above 2.5 and Select starts approaching $6+ per mile the times you will get a ping it is so rare you are better off taking the X with the surge.
