Hit and run with a bright side

Hi! I'm new here. I have enjoyed reading your stories and thought I'd share my tale from last night.

I was en route to pick up a pax at Ralphs when a car parked to my right started to pull into my lane. I wasn't going very fast, maybe 25 mph and it was clear to my left, so I swerved to try to avoid it. They stopped for a second and I thought I skated by, but then I felt the impact on the rear passenger side of my car.

And then the inevitable, the other driver backs up, zips around my car and hauls ass down a side street. Although I was not in the greatest area, adrenaline kicked in and I took off in pursuit. I got about 2 blocks before my passenger side rear tire blew, and I lost them. So back to the Ralphs I went.

There was a period of crazy - a random tow truck driver pulled up and offered to take my car FOR FREE because he's super awesome and works with all the insurance companies! I was pretty shaken at this point, so I could have done without the dude trying to convince me to let him hold my car hostage. An hour later, I have a spare tire on, a kid who drove out to help is Mom for nothing because her car IS drive able after all, and still no LAPD, but is that surprising? At least now I can drive home.

Oh and I can't leave out the best part. Jose! Jose worked at the store and asked if I was the one in the accident. Yes! There were a couple of witnesses, video from the store of the accident, and the manager had taken two pics of the car on his phone and one was clear enough to read the license plate.

The hit and run driver was actually the get-away driver for the two dudes who were robbing the Ralphs. Driver panicked, hits me, panicks more, and drives off. Dumbass (that would be me) pursues panicked criminal who was racing off to meet up with more criminals who steal stuff. Sweet!

I promised a bright side. Here it is:
-I am super happy I got a flat tire and lost them in traffic.
-I am super happy I had added rideshare to my auto insurance.
-I am super happy I added rental car insurance when I added the rideshare to my insurance.
-I am super happy I did not have a pax in the car.
-I am super happy Jose found me in the parking lot because it hadn't even occurred to me to go inside the Ralphs and ask if anyone saw anything.

It sounds like it will be an uphill battle to get my insurance company to waive the 1K deductible - unless I can identify the other car, the driver, and determine whether or not they have insurance (they say).

I am also told my car will probably be totaled. Oh well, who needs a expensive new car to commute and Uber in anyways, right...Right!!!??? There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. I have a real job - I should add that to the Bright Side list. I Uber because I have taken more financial hits than I planned for, like most people I suppose. I'll add a new-to-me car to the list of things to figure out how to pay for. There's a light at the end of the tunnel, the tunnel got a bit longer.

As long as the car isn't upside down from retail value, with money owed

2014 Honda Accord, bought new and paid for. 107k miles puts Blue Book around 9k. I am screwed on that. I put $1500 into it a month ago. I am hoping the ins co will throw me a bone but I am not holding my breath.

Good for you!!!!!......those insurance companies will deduct your tire and brake wear to save a buck to payout for total loss.

What kind of car you going to get with the check? Try and get lost wages also

Don't take their first payoff offer. There should be some wiggle room to get 500-1000 more. Do a little research for similar models and have it to back-up how much you want. I did claims for an insurance company about 20 years ago, and they usually have a range that they will pay. They offer the low-end, but you can usually argue up on that.

Great advise!
With a clear plate picture they'll get caught and get in serious trouble. Unless the car was stolen.

Thanks, that's great advice!

I am contemplating a used Lexus ES350 - hybrid would be amazing, but I have a beer budget so not sure I can find one for 20-25K. I am looking for a 2-4 year old car with under 40K miles on it, no accidents. I know I can get a ES350 that's not a hybrid for under 20K, so that may be the compromise.

Try and get lost wages also
Worth a shot.

My dream car! The hybrids live so long, could loosen mileage requirements? Driven almost daily, think they last as long as a Prius? 4 or 500K miles.

I don't know that they do. But I would doubt they don't.

Check out Hertz or Enterprise rental car sales. I bought a Hertz rental Prius, with 35K on it. Got it for a great price. 140K miles later, it's still running great. Haven't had to do any repairs.
