I've learned alot by reading UP forums. I used to take every ride including long pickups, kids without car seats, unaccompanied minors, and the heavily inebriated but thanks to UP, now I know better.
Unfortunately, the rate here is 61 cents per mile so it's just not worth it and the only reasonable choice is to quit as soon as a "real job" comes along. In the meantime, I'll be on the road.
