With all that's going on and not going on (no rides!) I thought we could collect some helpful info (discounts, free stuff, etc.) in one place. Many rumours are circulating, so be skeptical. If you find something helpful, please post.

I was just on Reddit and read a post about "free two month credit" for MetroPcs. I can confirm that they will not disconnect your service if you contact them when your bill is due. I called 1-800-373-2876 to hear a message about it. The recording said they are not giving free service, but can help if you pay on time.
I am sure other cell service providers are offering certain relief deals. Twitter is out of control with people saying they got credit and others saying no credit, so do your own research. I could not get through on the phone.

Gig: Roadie
I have not delivered for Roadie for about 15 months. My car was in the shop and I had a rental, so I tried Roadie. I only did their Home Depot deliveries and looking back at my receipts, they were $9 to $11 each and involved very short distances. Roadie also delivered misplaced/lost luggage for some airlines, but I am not sure if that is still a thing. These luggage deliveries were terribly underpaid, considering you have to go to the airport then drive x miles to the customer.

I you owe the IRS this year on taxes, you have until July 15 to pay. Still need to file by 4/15 though.

Not sure about the state of CA.
Don't plan on any break from California... as a matter of fact, plan on Sacramento to begin a flurry of bills to get more money out of Californian's, for the shortfalls of tax revenue, due to all the business closings across the state. It happen during the drought....They said don't use water..... one month later they were raising rates and adding sur charges because of decreased revenue.......Which we are still paying by the way. Also with the checks the feds are giving us.... next year California will make sure we put that as income on our returns so they can hit us for that too.

If the government can get their s*** together, we may get $1,000 check in the next two to three weeks.
I don't really expect this to happen, but it's possible.
I need it now not 2 to 3 weeks.

Have any drivers here, part-time or full-time, applied for unemployment yet? I'm curious to know the outcome. Full-time driver here, who willfully hasn't driven for the past 1.5 weeks in order to avoid catching and spreading the bug.
I applied yesterday. Says I'll know before 3/27. It's real unfortunate Uber/Lyft have been fighting AB5 which would have secured us minimum wage.

I have applied for UE benefits as of this evening.

Couple of things in the online application:

  • Non citizens need two government ID numbers, alien and one other.
  • No apparent differentiation between an "Uber IC" and employee. They will ask for a supervisors name. I put unknown.
  • Request for earnings for past 18 months. This is used to determine benefits. I took the gross numbers off my 1099's.
  • There is a section which lets you select why you are not working or why you have reduced hours. The drop down menu specifically says Disaster and the sub menu Public Health Issue.
  • There appears to be some disqualifiers such as reviving a pension or retirement income, but it didn't apply to me.
Application time about 20 minutes.

I envisage that the state of California would like to pass off as many applicants as they can back to the "employer". The "employer " only has X many days to reject the application on first notice. From my previous employment, those notices to employers arrive with less than days for a mandatory response from the employer before judgement is made. No response is considered no objection. With the state in chaos, and the influx, who knows if they can respond.

My apologies to the State for asking for this.

Free shoes! Portland-based KEEN has a way for you to send some shoes to someone in need. Link (best to use Chrome, I got nowhere with Firefox):

Thanks for taking the time to provide this information, dude. With the extra free time we have, I think it's worth trying to help our community out. I read that some EDD sites were crashing, so let us know if you experienced any issues. I was thinking the best time to log on would be at 3 a.m. or so! I am up at that time anyway, getting reading for my now non-existent airport drop-offs!

Keen makes an absolutely great quality steel toe work boot. When I was briefly working as a electrical apprentice almost 4 years ago, the boots were sturdy and comfortable as can be. Since leaving that field, I cleaned them up and still wear them on rainy days. They look great with a pair of blue jeans.

Please tell me you did kind things for people while you were busy driving uber and not selfish and greedy towards passengers.

Did you fill it all out as Uber being your employer? I'm kind of confused with the application. Should I just file for Uber or also add Lyft? That seems to complicate the application. Are you claiming not to be an independent contractor? Sorry, if these are obvious questions. I have never had to fill out unemployment before. I just want to fill it out for the best chance at being accepted. Is there a certain amount of hours you need to claim you worked a week? I am full time, but usually only work 32 hours a week.

  • I filled out the application with Uber as the primary employer.
  • A second drop down asks if you have any other employers in a given period; I included Lyft. It was only here that earnings were asked for. I used my gross earnings total as per my Lyft 1099.
  • I'm not claiming to be an IC. One of the questions included wording to include misclassified employees. I'll let them sought out if I'm misclassified.
  • I claimed full time hours with Uber of 45/w and Lyft 34/w. From my previous employment, hours above 32/w were full time hours.
Since applying I've done some digging around. Turns out both companies do in fact pay into the UE Insurance program, for all those full time app developers, marketing and add people. If the EDD pays out, they'll access the monies from those employees contributions, to pay misclassified drivers.
