I have days where I can really hit it off with all passengers and do great. Than there is that day where you get all the shitty people. I wait about five minutes for these passengers and they hop in no drop off location... I was literally about to cancel when they hop in... I can't just smile and act like I really want to associate with these people.. maybe I'm just a dick. Before that a girl at a bar requests me... its a very busy street in Boston mind you its 7pm its right at a turn in the street with heavy congestion of cars moving fast so I'm waiting... 1... 2... minutes I text no answer than I call and she says shes coming.. like the ****! I hate when people do that.

You will notice a kind of cyclical component to the way people seem to behave. You as a driver a likely stuck in the same pattern as your pax too for that matter. Whether and holidays are obvious times when people can be more difficult to be around or more at their extremes. Not uncommon at all to have days where everyone seems to be a bit tough to handle. Don't be too quick to judge though. I notice often enough it is me not having my best day as much as anything. Girlfriend trouble, something needs fixing in my house, wife problems, something needs fixing on my car, paternity questions, that kind of stuff can effect your ability to put up with obnoxious strangers riding in your back seat for pennies above cost. Don't sweat it, it all works out.

my rating went from around 4.85 down to 4.76 in the last month. i'm sure the rate cut is written all over my face, and pax rate base their ratings upon my scowl.

A couple of weeks ago I had a 4.67 for the week. I wasn't feeling well, and the pax must have picked up on it. The past two weeks I have received great ratings. I think displaying an air of polite, professional confidence is the best approach.

Let the pax take the lead on conversation. I always ask if the AC temp is good and mention that if they know a route better than what Google Maps is displaying, that I don't mind their suggestions. This opens up a dialogue and lets them continue if they wish. Some people like to talk, some are interested in Ubering and ask questions, some have nervous energy and want to talk just because they have a motor mouth ;) , other people are fine with staring out the window. I keep the radio on low volume as background noise so the silence doesn't become uncomfortable.

I don't mind a bit of conversation, but in this city, like Boston, you have to give your undivided attention to the road and traffic, plus the GPS seems to always give directions while I'm trying to say something.

Yeah I do it similar I only use the GPS. I don't want to deal with pax directions or whatever. Unless they are sure. I can tell most in Boston don't like it when Uber drivers don't know the area well.

Don't you have your doors locked? I do and I wind down my window slightly , ask for his name to verify. If I'm happy, then I unlock the door, especially at night. I don't just let them hop in.

Girlfriend trouble, wife problems,
You have a girlfriend AND a wife! You lucky bastard! :p

I do the same. Much better than having forced convo.

Yes I do but its obvious when its my person or if I'm waiting and they come out. Or if its a girl I'm not worried. If its after 10pm I would be much more cautious. College kids tend to lie and you never know who else might. But in general everyone I pick up in Boston are professionals, tourists, or college students. I used to worry but that totally went away when I realized this is a very safe city to drive in.
