Simple as that ! if a pax lives in a gated complex and he knows i can't get it, he does not text me the code for the gate, does not wait for me outside the gate, AND there is no where to park near the gate, i just immediately cancel !
this is so frustrating, i drove 10 mins for a pax today to realize he lived in a gated community that was on a main road, there wasn't even enough space for me to turn around and i had to actually reverse my way out on the main road !! cars were honking !! there were no signs of the pax anywhere near the gate, i just drove off and cancelled. 5 mins later he requests me again ! i guess he was finally ready ! pos ! of course i did not accept.

If I get a gated community with no guard just a telephone, I call them and ask for the code or if they want to come to the gate. Gated communities are among the few addresses for which I will take the bother to stop and call first. As a rule, I do not accept a ping more than five minutes away from me, so it is not a big deal.

I get your frustration but gated communities are usually long trips. I hope you at minimum get a cancel fee before you cancel.

AUBs advice is spot on. Work it out as best you can if they are not willing to walk to the gate or give you the code then cancel.

Most rides are over in 15 minutes. Grit your teeth and get paid. On to the next rider

You'd change your mind about gated communities if you lived here. They're, literally, everywhere. During busy times the visitor line can be four and five cars deep. If the pax doesn't call ahead, they try to loop you around to the back of the line.

Another side effect of rate cuts is that chasing those fares just isn't worth it. Most of the worst experiences I've had driving were associated with a gated community.

The funny thing is a gated entrance really doesn't do that much to lower the crime rate. Crime still finds a way.

It just baffles me how those in a gated community do not have the presence of mind to either be near their gate or send a text while I'm in route with their gate code.

Do you want a ride or not? I'm sure this isn't their first trip so he/she should have a simple routine or train of thought when it's time to request a ride.

That's exactly what pisses me off, they know I'm gonna be stuck at the gate, why not either be by the gate or at least let me know the code or text me something. In the case of the idiot pax that requested me, the gate was on a main road with no where to park.

They're so brainless. It's fun to text them "I'm here" all while sitting at the gate to send a hint.

I didn't even think about this part. Passengers have no consideration for the process.
Most of the time you can pull a U-turn when you get to the front of the line, if your car is small enough.

Just ask a driver what the gate code is, tell them your an Uber driver and it drives you up the wall. Don't play around with gates either. UPS code usually if not there are usually other service codes.

thus I take the liberty to slightly improve the title of OP's post.

Gated complex+no contact+no where to park == CANCEL + don't you dare complain!!!

I face this problem twofold doing uberEats delivery downtown toronto.
idiot customers simply omit unit # and/or buzz code... parking instructions, a miracle when included; and I'm talking about uber customers living in highrises, in which parking and taking the elevator to the 50 th floor is a trip of its own
.

Sometimes tips make me forget about it. :)

Maybe in Seattle. Over here in Atlanta, gated communities are often 5 mins drive away from the outlet mall or restaurants.

I still make the effort of texting and calling but I will cancel at the 5 mins mark without hesitation.

I share your pain, went to gated community for a call- no guard to open gate, called pax no answer- wasted 10 minutes cancelled ride- no show
Uber said no $5 payment due to address unknown - go figure !

Pittsburgh doesn't have a lot of gated communities, but they were never a problem when I took the trip. Just rolled up to the guard shack, told the man the apartment number, he gave directions.
