The all-electric Rivian R1T is like no other truck out there. And while most buyers will likely spend the majority of their time on paved roads, Rivian makes no bones about the fact that the R1T is a serious off-road machine. If you've never had 826 lb.-ft. of instant, electric torque under your right foot, I can solidly say that you haven't lived.

Rivian notes there's still some work to be done before the R1T hits the road next year, but this thing easily survived eight days of intense off-roading, through tough dirt and dunes. Even when running at 38 psi over rocks, the stock Pirelli Scorpion tires never let me down, and I never once got a flat. The Rivian R1T has some mighty strong bones. And if it's this good through the toughest terrain, the fully fleshed-out production model should be nothing short of a game-changer.

More proof that electric vehicles are on the way into everyone's homes. Hopefully the charging infrastructure explodes as well.

Cool and impressive stuff, for sure.

I guess I fail to see whether that thing is meant to be used as a truck or as an off-roader? Sounds like it does the off-roading part well. However, with 4.5ft bed it sure is lacking in the truck department. Yeah, it does have good payload capacity, but where the hell are you going to put all that heavy stuff? 🤷‍♂️ Or even your normal sheet of plywood?

Then again... Nobody who needs a truck for actual truck duties will consider this or the Cybetruck as their primary workhorse anytime soon anyway.
