I guess driving skill don't matter.
Driving skill is assumed when you flash your license to sign up as a driver. It can be revoked later, but put simply it doesn't matter - and wouldn't even be considered by most riders.

What will matter to the rider after the first few bookings is the lack of available drivers, especially if some distance from the ants' nest.

Eh, not too worried. It might be a perk if you're a female driver. But the fact is, only 20% of drivers are female so unless your market is already saturated, this would just result in a longer wait for most pax. Chances are, most women are not going to want to wait longer for a female driver. They might try it once but when it shows "20 minute wait" vs. 3 minute wait for one of us "regular" male drivers, they'll likely change their mind pretty quick.

Good ol' misandry, totally acceptable in the 21st century.

Certainly women can have a legitimate concern about improper comments or actions from a male driver. However, considering that where I drive less than 10% of the drivers are women, wouldn't it make more sense to create a filter where you'll only ride with a driver of 4.9x or higher? Presumably those drivers would have far less issues with female passengers.

Misandry is always a thing ... until war breaks out, then it's "men, please save us".

I wonder if there will soon be chick-pax that start rating ugly men low so as to signal to other women that the men with high ratings are "hot".

I spoke to a female pax about this on Saturday afternoon. She mentioned that she used this feature late on weekend nights (on Lyft). I couldn't really blame her. She was petite, attractive and young so it made sense she would be in favor of this if she was traveling alone.

Per my previous post, she did also mention that she tried it for all her rides but found exactly what I thought might be the case - that it would take considerably longer to get a driver. She said that during the day, she decided not to use it because she's never had an issue with a driver during the day (she didn't mention that she had problems at night either....).

This makes too much sense. If a 4.9 filter was implemented though, I wonder how much ratings would be weaponized.

As far as female drivers go, would I qualify if I identify as female? In Raleigh I don't think there are very many female drivers late Friday and Saturday night because they have to worry about being harassed by the male pax who struck out at the bar. Who knows, if female drivers can select to only take female pax then more of them might be willing to drive. Whatever the case, it's probably not going to optimize earnings for anyone, likely more wasted dead miles..

Most of the CURRENT women pax will probably get fed up with a 20 minute wait time and order a random driver.

HOWEVER, there are probably a lot of women who are terrified so much of getting raped in their Uber that this new woman driver request could actually increase the number of women willing to give a ride a shot. Some women will wait the 20 minutes to not get raped, and might rather just spend the night at a friend's house rather than hop in car with some random dude.

Could still be a net win. If this increases overall rider count, it would tie up women drivers leaving more of us dirty-bastard-rapist-man drivers to take other rides for the non-paranoid riders. Or it could also increase women riders which might use the women-only option for now, but when they can't get a women driver in good time, they may opt to take that HUGE risk of a man driver after which they'd find there's no problem (in 999,999,999 of 1,000,000,000 cases when having a man driver) after which they'd be fine having a man driver in the future.

That's a super convoluted paragraph but you get the jist. 🤪

Certainly possible. I would say that women's concerns with male drivers is a bit more nuanced than just rapists and happens much more frequently. Many women that I've spoken to do not appreciate being hit on when they are just trying to get a ride. There are way to many drivers out there apparently who can't read the room and will take their shot when this is not a dating service. Then you also have the guys who either don't understand the word no or think no is just a starting point. I've spoken to enough female passengers who have voluntarily told me about the issue to think that it probably happens somewhere in the 5 to 10% range, actual assault obviously being much less frequent.

I was not aware of that. I were a female pax and someone did that, even "nicely", I'd report their ass in a heartbeat. That's just uncalled for.

Looks like I'd be a Karen if I were female 😆
