I now realize surges are meant to rout cars to areas. Not for the sake of surges but for the sake Uber wants a certain amount of drivers in a destination. By manipulating the system. It keeps the supply demand even.

They let a few "surge drivers" get a fee. But the majority are sitting right in the "surge red area" and not one ping. They make the drivers go there kinda like crowd control, but its car control.

Don't forget the by time you get there it disappears trick.

*** If DRIVERS WOULD LEARN TO STAY RIGHT OUTSIDE THE RED AREA. YOU WOULD GET THE FEE.

I picked up on that and made a thread about it in the Las Vegas forum. Now, I completely ignore surge zones. If I get surge, that's super. If I don't, then it's no different than if I had moved a mile to get into a surge zone to have it disappear, or a mile over to airport staging to find out that there are somehow 38 cars in queue during a 3X surge, which will of course have vanished completely by the time I come up in queue.

Did you learn this from the uberman? haha, sorry, I had to.

The surges are real and it is inevitable that it will disappear when you arrive. Why? Because that is what it is designed to do. Lure drivers to a certain area to keep with demand. Once enough cars come, the demand has been met and will go down. btw, many riders know now surge is only for a few minutes and will simply wait it out allowing more time for drivers to arrive.

The trick to getting a surge is prediction and being in the right spot at the right time. You have to predict what event will lead to surge, and at what time? (usually at the end). You need to realize now that if uber says it will be busy in yoru app, they are telling every single other driver about that event. You have to find the lesser known ones, like a wedding out in cypress or, my favorite was white oak music hall after their first couple of shows. uber did not know about it, no other drivers knew about it. Once uber posted it in the weekly tips.. the surge was gone..

I noticed this tonight. I was already in downtown/midtown. I got 3 very short rides with a surge of 1.8-2.0. Once I dropped off the last pax I saw downtown surging at 3.8. Haven't seen that in a while, sadly I sat for about 15 min with no ping and watched it disappear to 1.5.

There was a huge surge this morning all along 59 just inside the Beltway...however, if you have your tools and know what to look for...you would have seen the surge was ONLY Select. I can guarantee newbies were tugging on that blood string just trying to get there and had no idea that neither X or XL was even surging. Funny thing (well, not so funny...because Uber is jackasses) there were Selects within 3-5 mins everywhere, and per mile surge was well over $6/mile. There were no pings happening. None. Nada. All BS.
