The first thing you need to know is that per http://www.njlaws.com/39-3-17.html?id=3091&a= , it is illegal for any NJ plated TNC vehicle to operate at the airport. While there is potential to be rewarded with long fares, there is also a downside that includes the risks of being ticketed, towed, and/or having your vehicle impounded.
Here are a few simple rules to live by to keep your risk minimized should you decide to operate here.
1. Insist that your passenger sit in the front seat.
2. Keep your phone hidden while on airport grounds.
3. Make your pick-up/drop-off as quickly, efficiently, and seamlessly as possible. DO NOT LINGER!
4. Act like you know your passenger. A simple handshake and a few words of small talk camouflage the appearance of being a ride for hire.
5. Be confident and act like you belong. This is really not much different than dropping off/picking up a friend or family member who's giving you gas money for your trouble.
6. Obey all traffic laws, signs, and police/PAPD directives.
If you do all this and still somehow find yourself being pulled over and questioned by an officer,
1. Be polite, calm, and professional at all times.
2. You do not have to admit to being a TNC driver. We may respectfully inform an officer that we choose not to answer any questions.
3. If you feel compelled to answer, tell the truth. Officers are highly trained to detect lies and they will only lead to more trouble.
Should you receive tickets, immediately email support. Per Uber's website, they will review the citation and determine how to proceed. While not guaranteed, the company may reimburse the cost of the tickets and/or possibly provide an attorney to represent you if necessary.
The goal of this thread is to keep all the information about EWR in one place so that new drivers can always reference it. Experienced drivers, please feel welcome to offer any suggestions on how to improve this advice, and I'll update accordingly.
