DPU & CORI - Are they the same background check?

Hi. I searched trying to find the answer but couldn't locate anything. Sorry for what is probably a simple question! I signed up to be a driver just last night, submitting my registration, license and proof of insurance. I got my approved DPU Certificate via email today, less than 24 hours later. (I'm kind of a squeaky clean middle-aged harmless female :) .) Is the CORI check over and above this? What wold the next step be to be approved to drive? (Admittedly, I'm in a location right now where I can't access the Uber driver site on the computer I'm using, so it's hard to understand the remaining steps for approval.

Thanks in advance. I've gotten great information on this forum as I prepare for a post-retirement part-time job.

Correction: the CORI background check is run by the DPU, as is a review of your driving record on file at the registry of motor vehicles.

You must sign a release form with Uber/Lyft that gives them permission to request the DPU to run the checks.

Before Uber/Lyft submits you to the DPU for these checks, they use an online background check system that looks back seven years, nationally. It is broader in geography but much less complete in detail. This check can miss things that can show up under CORI or RMV, which includes data going past seven years. RMV has your entire MA driving history and CORI will have court records from MA going back to your birth. If you ever went to court for ANYTHING, it is likely in your CORI.

CORI is the Criminal Record Offender Information. Which is maintained by the courts. It really has nothing to do with Lyft or Uber other than they request the Cori on you. Just like any other employer can. That information is held in the State Police criminal data base in Chelsea. Basicly it is a criminal backround check. The DPU cert is a driving record check conducted by the Department of Public Utilities which over sees drivers for hire like cabs ride share truck drivers etc. Their check is done through the registry of motor vehicles Obviously there is some cross over in cases of criminal driving offenses like DUI
