As many of you know around midnight they (Mpls. police) put up barriers on Hennepin and 1st Ave. I didn't think you could drive thru them until I followed a cab doing it. The security guy stopped me and said only cabs and Uber. I said "I am Uber". He said "wheres your sticker"? I showed him and he let me into the barriers where I picked up a PAX. HAs anyone else experienced this?

After seeing this I accepted a Lyft run in the barrier zone, the officer there said, no entry. I said I have a pickup waiting, and was an Uber/Lyft driver (properly marked). He said "too bad". I found a spot just outside and called my pax, long story short it was too far for his party to walk, so because I was on 3rd st, I had to take 2nd Ave to Washington, back over past Marquette, down to 7th st, to Hennepin, where I finally caught up with them on 6th (all in gridlock traffic). Then to get back to 3rd and the 394 exit. It was a good fare to Hopkins, but borderline worth it financially. However working with the pax through several phone calls to get them was good customer service, and they were grateful. No tip though. But I slept well.

I just avoid downtown altogether; not worth the hassle of taxis, walking drunks, and general traffic.

Having said, more power to you!
I'm very seriously thinking of boycotting Downtown Mpls on weekends as well JVC21. Had to kick out a fare (3 women) because they couldn't get their girlfriend into the car because she wanted to stay with the guy she had met. Spent 10 minutes waiting finally said enough is enough.

Just keep doing "Cancel - Rider No Show" until you get a really great surge (unless the pax was courteous enough to be somewhere where you can get to them, or takes the 2 minutes to walk the block in the correct direction). That's the only reason to be DT after 1:30am. It doesn't pay until after 2...just wait till it's like -10 and the ladies didn't bring coats...

The only time I have the patience for their dillydallying is above 3X and preferably closer to 4X.

I can answer this question correctly. My brother is a MPS cop in downtown for the 1st precinct.
*Only commercial vehicles can pass the barrier and only when they first put up the barrier and can stay until they get passengers. Once inside the barrier they give you a little time to retrieve until everyone must exit. All cars (taxis and limos).
On 2nd Ave behind the bars they can pass through to exit and don't have to be forced on to the freeway. This rule only applies to taxis and limos and doesn't include rideshare companies. You might fool a traffic controller but cops will not be fooled by Uber or Lyft stickers otherwise anyone could just put a sticker on their window and bypass the barriers. You can't fool commercial plates.

*As I already stated you are NOT a commercial vehicle and are NOT allowed down Nicollet Ave or any other restricted lanes like west bound Marquette or bus lanes and you do NOT carry commercial insurance. I've seen cars pulled over on Nicollet trying to cut around and been pulled over. It's a ticket. If you hit a biker or pedestrian while trying to Uber or Lyft in a restricted lane you can kiss your freedom goodbye...and your "job" and insurance. Big time trouble. This is exactly what my brother told me so I highly suggest you take an officers word over anyone's. It's also against policy and we were told about it in the online video.

:mad:And like others said, avoid bar close. That's when trouble happens, too many drunks on the road, passengers puke in your car, crank your speakers and blow them and rate you low. #notworthit

how do he and his friends feel about uber drivers?
My brother likes the fact people have options to get people home safe but doesn't like that drivers are not properly insured. He was my biggest factor in quitting. They have also noticed traffic has gotten worse and I showed him one night the amount of drivers on the road. He said if the city knew there where going to be that many drivers, Minneapolis should have placed a cap. He also said drivers are causing traffic jams. Drivers pull over to where people ping and just park. There is no stopping on Hennpien Ave, and they have issued many citations to Uber and Lyft drivers. Also they have cited many drivers putting lights in their cars like a limo. That glowy mustache Lyft has drivers use is illegal in Minnesota. They must use a sign in window and cannot have anything illuminated. Even that air freshener that says "Uber" cannot be hanging from mirror. This is something Uber or Lyft doesn't tell their drivers.
Also the city requires by law drivers must display trade dress on vehicle and don't. That's a violation and a ticket. They have noticed illegal street hails and and have reported them. What they are doing about that, I do not know. I think the city will do a crackdown on drivers soon. The cabbies are complaining to the city. He was called over to city hall because they were protesting and blocked the entire block. They know drivers are picking up illegally at the airport when they see passengers being dropped off at hotels with luggage. They can see the Uber app in Windsheild. There's nothing they can do about it. They don't enforce it. (Hey I'm guilty of that too;)...until I was caught by airport police and was given a warning. You get 1.
But overall except for the traffic violations they don't enforce Uber or Lyft but the city will have a task force to watch over drivers soon. For now it's the Wild West out there.
He also doesn't think is right drivers don't get tips. He himself has never used Uber but has stated others on the force have and they've pretty much said they've had positive experiences. Biggest thing on their minds right now is public safety and trying to get a grip on the assholes that keep bringing guns and weapons into downtown on weekend nights. Also random assaults and robbery is problematic. Basically they have bigger things to worry about.

I just hate having a trade dress on my windshield. I want to make it as discreet as possible when driving.
I put mine on last night for the first time in a long time...I need to use lyft's sleeve and laminate them together so I can take it down when I don't need it

Cops have been great to me DT. Maybe it's bc I'm Irish! They always let me through the barriers with my Uber sticker (which I rarely have on dash... I keep it in glove compartment and just hold it out my window and they seem cool. Also got a warning going 45 in a 30 (cruising down Washington trying to get to pax before he canceled his 3.8 surge fare)...pretty sure it was because of Uber.

Thanks for the inside scoop. I did have a PAX call me as I was on the way to get her at a hotel near the airport last night. She said I'm really at the airport can you pick me up there. I politely declined. I did it once and didn't like it too risky. Of course I was pinged again by her 1 minute after she canceled.

I've had a couple PAX take the light rail to the VA ($1.50). That works well. I have been telling PAX that I drop off at the airport, they always mention they wish they could get picked up as well, about this work around so hopefully others will follow suit.

I've been driving since April and I agree with everything you said. Pax after 2 am in DT MPLS are nothing but ****ing assholes! Head to Ne Mpls or Uptown. Slightly older crowd that can handle their alcohol.
