Hi neighbors.

A question for you. I have a cousin who lives in your beautiful city and with whom I discuss and argue about different topics on a regular basis. One thing we argue about is how well Uber/Lyft drivers are doing in Vancouver. He doesn’t drive for Uber, but supposedly knows well many people who do.

I used to drive for Uber in Seattle before the pandemic, so I know what things were like before the pandemic, and from drivers who drive these days, I hear that in Seattle things are still less good, or more bad than before the pandemic.

But what my cousin is telling me is that his buddies who do Uber in Vancouver are killing it. People are buying Teslas and other EVs left and right, and paying them off, and living the life. He makes it sound like Uber drivers are doing better than most people.

I tell him that my experience was different and that my average after taxes and expenses was $20 an hour.
I reaaaly doubt that things are so much better up north but can’t offer an argument where I simply say that they’re bullshitting him. Because I really don’t know.

So I figured I’d ask you here for your opinion; are you doing so well up there that you can justify buying a Tesla and make enough money to pay it off and live a good life with a spouse and a couple of kids? I hope you can.

Thanks!

No, you cannot buy a Tesla and feed/house a family in Vancouver making what Uber pays.

I drive full time in Calgary, and while it is busy here, doing that would be extremely tight to impossible as well. FWIW our housings costs here are 1/4 that of Vancouver.

Thanks a lot for your response. I don't think there is any place where you can buy a Tesla and feel a family, especially in Vancouver, which is the least affordable city on the continent. Average income is good 40% higher in Seattle than in Vancouver, and that's before you calculate Vancouver's insane housing costs. Cheers!
