Every time I think I have Uber Pool figured out, I find out I am wrong.

At first I though while both passengers were in the car they were splitting the cost of the ride, but I don't think thats the case. It seems its only beneficial to the second rider, while the first one gets screwed.

What you see as your payments coming from pax 1 and pax 2 have no relation to how much each one was charged. Uber pays you based on distance and time from point of first pick up to last drop off, as if it were one single ride. The split that they show you if for show. Each pax is charged an amount that was determined and fixed from the moment they requested based on the pickup and drop off location; this amount remains fixed and doesnt change no matter what you do.
I understand that, but how is it beneficial to the passenger? I have passengers ask me about it, but I have no idea how to tell them how much they are paying. Are they sharing the cost of the ride? Are they paying, for Los Angeles purposes, 11 cents a minute/95 cents a mile, or are they somehow sharing this cost?
