Always check the credit card slot at gas stations to see if it is solid for skimmers. I Lso have text alerts for any transaction over $1

Happens all the time in South Florida, also the Orlando area.

The gas station skimmers are amateurs. The most likely place to have your card skimmed is a restaurant or bar. The seedier the bar, the more likely you are to get hit.

Many waitstaff carry skimmers in their aprons and make more money skimming your mag stripe than they do from your generous tip. They sell the skimmer to a counterfeiter who gives them a new skimmer, and they're good to go for another week or so.

The counterfeiters transfer your data to the mag stripe of a stolen card (or sometimes blank credit card stock). They often test it by buying $1-2 worth of gas at a gas station, and if the card hasn't been canceled yet, they sell it to the people who do the actual fraud. They also download and sell the raw data to people elsewhere who encode other card stock. If you see a strange charge on your account from another city, that's what happened. If you see a charge from Alpharetta , GA, it's Nigerians.

Most credit card companies have very strong fraud detection algorithms in place and detect fraud quickly. I've never suffered any actual loss; the credit card companies or merchants have always taken the hit.
