Wild idea: What if a city or county imposed rules to rein in the abuses of Uber/Lyft and gave a significant amount of control to drivers? Could it work? Is it desirable? Is it legal?

They would withdraw from said city, most likely.

Just like when the municipalities themselves impose strict rules to give them power over TNP, drivers themselves having some power against the companies would still be against said company’s best interests: money.

Would be nice, but I don’t think it’ll happen.

Uber specifically has wide ranging abuses. Many of which are being investigated or involving suits in courts right now.

Drivers are at the bottom of the totem pole so to speak. Cities or counties would not want to give control to drivers.

The content of those rules would quickly become a commodity for the politicians to sell to the highest bidder.

Such a system would benefit nobody except the corrupt politicians. See taxi regulation history worldwide for thousands of examples.

What makes you think Drivers are entitled to such control?

Government taking over a private corporation and giving away control of that corporation as they see fit. What is this, North Korea?

London and province of Quebec are currently slated to separate from uber in the coming weeks. Will be interesting to see which side folds first.

Government screws everything up. Price controls, driver controls, it all creates a negative market, higher prices, degredation of the product.

Tell me something the government is heavily involved in regulating that's operating efficiently and well. USPS? Healthcare industry? Maybe we should get the corrupt labor unions in on the destruction!

Jesus.

All the above! Let's get the Feds in on it, the State, County and City, as well as Unions! Oh boy, this is going to be fun!

Ok comrade. Yes, ALL good should flow from the government teat.
I agree. *tounge in cheek*
Uber should be taken over by the same 'crats that run Medicare.

WikiLeaks reports that "Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that administers Medicare, estimates that last year some $60 billion of American taxpayer money, or more than 10 percent of Medicare's total budget, was lost to fraud, waste, abuse and improper payments."

That doesn't matter though, does it? It's only 'taxpayers' money.
