Im Money Hungry AF!!! Ill be the first to admit that. But even a Long Haul lord and master such as myself has a soft spot....

I will automatically shut off my app and give a freebie to any patient being picked up from a Dialisys center. It hits extremely close to home for me.

Am I the only one with a charitable side still, or did the Biz create too much apathy?

This is very admirable yet I'm not 100% sure it's legal. When you take a pax for free when they would have used the uber platform, aren't you taking money out of uber's pocket? Like if I was a cashier at a grocery store and someone very poor came in, I couldn't let a few things past the scanner for free.

You may be giving up your $5 fare but you're robbing uber of their $8 take.

One other thing, your insurance, it doesn't cover a free ride, unless you lie and say it was a friend, there could be issues in the event of an injury accident. Uber has coverage on Pax I believe to a million that most of our private insurances don't. My insurance only covers me to and from an uber ride, not during. In an accident with a pax that's going to be a legal nightmare. Please would someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I have turned my app off and done some free BS late at night a few times due to incompetent drunk shenanigans/issues but in my cases, there was no ride request put in to uber through the platform then cancelled.

Personally I think it's awesome what you did. Legally I think you're going to be in a world of hurt if there's an issue :)

If it comes down to it, its just me giving a friend a ride home.
I hope insurance fraud investigators don't check if there was ever an issue. Because when $ is involved, trust me, no one wants to pay out. That initial ride request is traceable. Just be careful. I wish the law took empathy into consideration. :)

I guess I would rather do the morally right thing, than worry about the legal ramifications of something were to happen.

It's a slippery slippery slope. On one hand, I was contracted a ride from said person to take them to one place to the other. On the other hand, as an independent contractor, I have the right to accept, refuse, or in limited cases, cancel any right I choose within reason.

(Except service animals aparently)

I don't know if it's the right thing or not, and I wouldn't fault anybody from choosing one way or the other. I just hope people in the world stay compassionate

In my experience, they're not the ones ordering or paying for the ride.
So you'll only be benefiting the people that are already making them take a second mortgage out on their home.

I know it's becoming a thing for doctors to Uber there patients back and forth. DaVita, the biggest dialysis player in the game, will not pay for a ride. They expect Medicare to pay for medical transportation, and if not, take the bus.

I think if was the pax and a driver asked me if I'd like a free ride with no/limited injury insurance, or would I like to pay 13 dollars (5 to driver 8 to uber) and have the million dollar coverage in case of a wreck, I'd pay the 13 and have the coverage. Be advised you also don't have accidental death insurance for your family while you're not logged on. Not sure if you're signed up for that. Maybe you have good private accidental death insurance Idk. I don't.

Frankly I think it's California living mentality that has me so hung up on this. (embarrassed face emoji)

Yes @ saying don't charge rider after the ride! I like that. I like that a lot.

Valid point @ cable guy about who's actually paying.

You are entitled to a lower rate including zero, however, turning the app off is a terrible idea unless you’re a tcp driver.

It only takes a second for that charitable act to bite you in the ass.

If you wanna give free rides. Finish the ride and then tell Rohit to issue a refund.

... until you get in an accident and the pax goes after Uber for insurance money. There is plenty of proof they requested a ride, you accepted, and you arrived....

delornick94 and Cableguynoe offered the best suggestions.

Couple other options (not recommended)
  • If you're charitable side dominates... slap them a $10 after the ride (depending on your share of the ride's cost) and tell them their next ride is on you.
  • Give them your personal number and tell them to call you the next time they need a dialysis pickup and if you're in the area, you'll give them a free ride.
Unless you're careful and smart about it, your generous charity will end up costing you a lot more than you bargained for.

I picked up a scheduled lyft ride, an older (80s) African-American lady going to a doctor's appointment. At the office I gave them my phone number. I didn't know how she had scheduled the lyft since she didn't know either. At the end of the day the office personnel called saying she was ready to be picked up. They weren't aware of how scheduling a pick up with lyft works either. I learned since then that the insurance company places the lyft request. But at that time neither the doctor's office, passenger, nor I knew the protocol. I went back and picked her up and took her to her home for no charge. She had a hard time stepping up into my truck. She was wearing a heavy leather knee length coat. I was able to grab it by both sides while she was in a seated position and hoist her the rest of the way into the seat. Fortunately she was not a large person. She had recently moved from New York City. I figured any African-American woman who had lived in New York city for 80 years I could at lesst help her out with a free ride due to all she had suffered.

If people need a ride to any medical facility they should be transported by a medical transport company . They are just shifting extra responsibility and work on to drivers for no extra money . Same goes for GoGo Grandparent . More work or hassle for no extra money .
Guess what? Somebody is charging extra money for these services and using ride share to pocket the difference .

While morally commendable... this is inadvisable.

If you get into an accident they can lawyer up and sue you directly, they can't sue uber or lyft either as you arn't on a fare.

If the worst happens you are at risk.

If you want to do this...

Pick them up and don't start the trip. Then cancel without charging at their destination.

Taxis have been used for this for a long time, usually the taxis are more expensive than their own drivers. Some of these companies only use taxis.

In the past, these fares have been gold mines for the taxi companies. I will say that these types of accounts are still what keeps taxis on the road in the daytime.

You need to embrace this long time reality of the for-hire industry and accept it for what it is. A source of daytime fares.
