Hello peeps. Gonna rant about one of my rides I had to cancel last night when I picked them pax up, and they were UberSelect pax. Since I do Uber/Lyft in NC, child restraint laws states clearly that a child must be in a child safety restraint system if they are 8 years and 80 lbs under. So heres the short story.

Got an UberSelect request while waiting in RDU airport last night (sweet, cuz the pay is great). Drove at least 10 min to pick up the select pax and what do I realize when I arrive there? A stroller and the child looked no more than 2 years old. I said "oh snap" to myself. I got out and ask if they have a child restraint system, they said they didn't and that it should be fine. I told them that if there wass anyway they can obtain or possibly have a child safety booster and they were like nope. I did state to them clearly that it will be a liability for your child and that I'm sorry but you have to request another Uber. They understood, said thank you, I said sorry again, and they said thats okay.

I've been reading alot of posts in the past involving child restraint systems where the pax would insist or get upset. I'm glad it didn't went down bad and it was a peaceful resolution. I did felt very bad though since they needed a ride back to Charlotte from Raleigh, I missed out probably a $500+ long UberSelect trip with 1.4x surge.

But I felt like ultimately did the right thing in the end and refuse the ride.
  1. I could've gotten pulled over, and the citation would be handed down to me. I'm a college student so I can't afford any more tickets.
  2. DUI checkpoints are common around where I drive and if I came across a DUI checkpoint, the officer would see the child without a restraint system and like what #1 is stated above, citation handed down on me.
  3. Deer. I encounter deer all the time during my rides, I usually have 2-3 deer that run out on me a week. I can't imagine enough anymore if I was to collide with a deer with a baby in the back. What happens likely? The parents would likely go against me in court and it would be a legal mess on my end.
  4. Insurance is waived if something was to go down involving a child with no restraint system.

So far I haven't received a complaint from them yet, but my dashcam caught the entire incident, if they were to make up false claims, etc.

Just a lesson for you drivers out there if you come across this situation.

He would have accepted the ride if the pax complied with the child safety seat law, Therefore the fault is on the pax and he deserves a cancellation fee.
Right but if they were decent humans they would have cancelled on their end for his time, effort, gas etc spent to get all the way there only to find that they didn't have the sufficient legal safety equipment for their kin-blood youngin'.

No amount of money for any trip would be worth the ticket, the possible job loss, the guilty conscience, or the pax owning me financially for the rest of my life in the unfortunate instance of an accident...

I never ever take children without proper car seat or restraints... no exceptions... regardless of how much the parent or guardian whines to me about it.

Yesterday, had a call to a Wal-Mart. Two adult women, a shopping cart PILED full with groceries, and no less than three kids, who look about 3-8 years old. So, not only one too many passengers, but also no car seats. They say oh no, it's fine, and one of them can sit on our laps. I tell them no, they say oh please, you're the third uber driver. Sorry, no.

After the first two, you didn't AT LEAST decide to get an uber XL?

Cheers to the other two uber drivers who also refused to drive them. I wonder if someone finally did.

I run into this multiple times almost every week I drive with parents not having a car seat. I politely refuse every single one stating the Lyft policy, my state's law(8yr/80lb), & a subtle hint of "its obvious youre a parent that is not concerned for your kid's safety as much as a stranger is". Yeah I lose money but that kid stays safe as far as I'm concerned. Until they call for another Lyft and that driver gives them a ride anyway.

Entirely not worth the risk and they should be ashamed of themselves as parents for attempting it.
