I’ve been driving for Uber for over six years and making a comfortable living on it. Then suddenly last week I found I wasn’t getting any trips, and support told me it was because my background check has expired. I authorized its renewal weeks ago, and the order for it has now been submitted multiple times, both by me and by support. And yet, when I look on Checkr the report isn’t even there. They never received it. I keep calling Uber support, and they keep telling me they’ll escalate my case and get it fixed ASAP, for all the reassurance that gives me. In the meantime, I’m going broke fast and having to consider emergency options.

This has been happening to numerous drivers. Instead of starting the background check thirty days before the current one expires, they wait until the current one expires then put you out of work until they get a new one. If you get put into some electronic limbo and forgotten, too,. too bad for you. Neither Uber nor Lyft will do anything to help you. When you contact either Uber or Lyft, they give you the same nonsense but do nothing.

Is Lyft in your area? Try them.

If you have not learned this yet, you are now learning it; at Uber and Lyft, everything is done at the maximum inconvenience of the driver.

Being registered with only 1 company is unsafe for this very reason. These companies will cut off your access for no reasons or stupid reasons.

I'm registered with all of the gig apps I know of that operate in my area, plus I have a few other sources of self-employment income and a part-time W2 job.

When you speak to Uber support, make sure to speak to them nicely as if you would a customer when you know you're being evaluated (because they might be doing that). If support asks you to make sure to provide them (positive) feedback, make sure to give them positive feedback on the app. That's what happened on my last call with them before they initiated a background check on me (I verified on Checkr).

I do think this is one of Uber's ploys to decrease total driver hours on the road, so they can justify higher prices to riders.

Don't rely on just Uber for income. It's not reliable. Do other gig work, and if possible, do non-gig work as well to balance out the gig work. I just applied to and got accepted to work at Amazon Fresh, so I'll be doing that along with Uber. I also applied to Domino's Pizza, but I will probably not do that.

Welcome to the club! I've also been driving six years but mostly ubereats. I'm 42 days of not able to do deliveries because of the background check, so since then I've become a top dasher for Doordash. There's a couple of things I don't like about Doordash but in the meantime I'm still able to make ends meet as a dasher. I finally got a appointment today at the Greenlight office and if they can't solve this situation then I'm closing my uber account out because this is unacceptable and unheard of. Almost want to get some legal advice to see if I can file a lawsuit!!!

Same here. Five years, nearly 2k riders (I only do it on weekends) and 4.99 star rating and all that means nothing to them. I have gotten the same response over and over again when I open tickets through the app. I tried on Twitter and no matter what I say, they reply with "Let's fix this through DMs!" and nothing gets resolved. When I call in they tell me they're escalating it to the Background Support Team who does not have a phone number. I've been offline since September. I have verified with Checkr that they completed my Background Check and sent it to Uber weeks ago. No one can do anything about it. The amount of time I've spent making their untrained techs reply to my messages and clogging up their 800 number has probably cost them more than if they just put me back online and started paying me.

One thing I find fascinating is that I'm still allowed to do Uber Eats, just not passengers. Since I mainly drive Friday and Saturday evenings for the lucrative drunk rush and all the restaurants around here close at 10pm that doesn't help me AT ALL. But it's interesting to know that someone with an unapproved background check can still deliver your food.
